My Five Favorites - Organization Room by Room

Happy New Year friends!
Welcome to our first edition of My Five Favorites for 2018, we're kicking off the year
with organization ideas! I'm always all over any great ideas to make my life easier
and more organized and I can't wait to see what my pals are sharing:

Jennifer @ Dimples & Tangles

We have the best of the best, organizing guru joining us this month, and I know you'll
love her fabulous ideas as much as I do!
Jen @ IHeart Organizing
is as sweet and genuine as she is on top of her organizing game!
I'm smitten with her laundry room and this paint cabinet of my dreams.
Jen also has an Etsy shop where you can find great organization charts and planners.

IHeart Organizing

On to my favorites...

#1 - Kitchen
Organized Refrigerator

I can't believe it's been two years since I shared a 'new' refrigerator organization system
At the time I mentioned I'd let you know how my bins worked out
and if they encouraged my boys to return items to their place. I loved the new uncluttered
look and was hopefully optimistic, but still skeptical that when in a hurry items would
get shoved front and center.
You guys, it totally worked and is just as organized as the day I first shared it!!
Here it is today, and all it took were the
$2 Clear Plastic Shoe Boxes from the Container Store!
Since then I've also added some to our extra refrigerator in the basement, I love using
one to corral all of our ingredients for Asian recipes instead of having them all in our
kitchen fridge.

Basement refrigerator - storage bin for Asian recipe ingredients.

#2 - Foyer
Coat Closet

I can't even imagine what a mess our coat closet would be without my shoe organizer
to keep our gloves, beanies, dog leashes, and miscellaneous items contained. We have a
separate bag dedicated to only ski equipment that we can easily grab when we head out.
I've had this one for years, I think I found it at TJ Maxx. It simply hangs from a couple
small nails. It's easy to change out for the seasons, in the summer it's great for pool and
 outdoor activity items too.

#3 - Basement
Accessory Storage

I'm showing you a little corner of my 1938 basement laundry room ONLY because I can
crop it in so close and I love this idea! A few years ago when I read The Magic of Tidying Up,
one of the tips that resonated with me was to 'organize by category.' I didn't even realize how
many different areas I had vases stored (basement, kitchen, dining room) or how
inefficient it was. It was the first idea I implemented after reading the book, now I keep
all of them (other than what I'm currently using to decorate) on an IKEA Billy Bookcase
in my basement. The reason I love it is because it's 11" deep, and can squeeze into a corner,
our 1938 ceilings are about 7' in the laundry room and it fits!
Add adjustable shelves, $69 (but they're always available on our Craigslist) and it holds a
 boatload of accessories!

 #4 - Kitchen
Never (almost) Re-Fill your Under Counter Soap Container Again

This is my all time #1 pinned and viewed organization idea! I'm always amazed, but every
time I share it there are readers that are so surprised and thankful! After all these years I've
forgotten how annoying it is standing on your head to re-fill that little soap container!

Use a large container of liquid dish detergent instead of re-filling your small bottle.
They sell kits for $10, but you don't need one. Buy a piece of plastic tubing from the
hardware store and attach it to the end of the pump at your counter.
Be patient it will take a few pumps to get the air out of the tube at first.

#5 - Purge!

Fingers crossed you didn't notice, but I didn't quite follow the
'Organization - Room by Room" theme for the month.
The truth is I have nothing to organize in my living room, family room, or dining room - all
of my dressers and cabinets are almost completely empty! I have a few cookbooks and
photos in one, some trays in one, and some candles, but that's it! And, I love not having all
of that stuff that I was saving for 'a day when I might need it.'
Disclaimer: I do have a basement for storage that's mostly for entertaining items
(dishes, glasses, linens) and my overflow Craigslist scores that I'm attached to. :)
Today when I was taking photos of my coat closet I noticed coats that we hadn't worn,
and out they went. The first time I purged, a few years ago after reading Marie Kondo's
book, I was still hesitant with some items - you know the sentimental or expensive ones -
not anymore! Purging is hands down my BEST organization idea - it feels so good not
to have all the stuff we'd acquired and didn't even use or like anymore!

My Five Favorite Tips to Tame the Holiday Crazy!

Happy November friends! The countdown to the holidays is on, only three short
weeks until Thanksgiving, then we blink and it's Christmas! For this month's My Five Favorites'
topic my blogging pals and I are sharing ideas to help keep the stress level low and fun level
high during the holidays! It's my favorite time of year and I remember ONE year when I was
SUPER organized, oh my gosh, it was so enjoyable!

Kris @ Driven by Decor
Lisa @ Shine Your Light
Jennifer @ Dimples & Tangles

I'm so excited to have Amy & Christy at 11 Magnolia Lane with us this month ~ they are
organizing gurus and I'm certain they have some tricks up their sleeve to share!

11 Magnolia Lane

Not only are they awesome at organization, DIY and decor, but they have an Etsy shop as
well. My favorite item I order every year is this chic gold vinyl monogram to put on the
 front of my calendar!

#1 - Black Friday
 $5 Fresh Wreath & Garland
Stock Up!!!

I gave you the scoop about this favorite Black Friday deal here. Home Depot sells
fresh wreaths and garland for $5!! I love to stock up (keep in your garage) to have on
hand throughout the season ~ it's a simple gesture to brighten someone's day if they find a
surprise wreath on their door step! I've used them to decorate inside and outside, as my gift
for my Favorite Things Party, a hostess gift, to add some cheer to a housebound neighbor's
gate. Over the years I've learned the garland is best left for outside decor, as it gets a tad
crispy inside. :(  I don't think they're on anyone's radar because there's no line or crazy
 people clamoring for them.

#2 - Frozen Cookie Dough
~ Neighbor/Teacher Gifts ~
Not your typical plate of cookies

You guys are going to laugh at me, but once I timed myself to see how long it took to
make a batch of cookie dough - 10 minutes! My point in telling you is that this gift is
so QUICK, easy and appreciated! And, you can do it in November!
Who doesn't love having homemade cookie dough in the freezer? Pop it in the oven at a
moment's notice if company drops by, for a snack, or a busy mom that needs a last minute
treat for school. It's my favorite gift to give ~ I shared all the details, and tips for pretty
packaging here.

#3 - Worth It
 vs
 Not Worth the Trouble List

I'm such a list girl, I don't know how people make it through the day without one!
Every year I make a list for the following year of what worked and what wasn't worth
the time or effort. I found the list changes year to year depending on what stage of life
your kiddos are in. I also have a book where I keep track of party details
(for about 15 years, a little OCD?) it helps jog my memory when putting together menus.
Date, Invitation, Guests, Food & Beverage Menu, and of course, what I wore.
You can see at my Annual Girlfriend Party last year I wore winter white pants and
cropped fringe sweater - monochromatic in case you're wondering. Hahaha!

#4 - Make Ahead
 Thanksgiving & Christmas Menus

If you think 'make ahead' means sacrificing quality and flavor, think again! Simply prepping
the time consuming chopping, dicing, making a sauce, etc. helps ensure a stress free day
when you're hosting the meal. My parents always host a crowd of family on Christmas day
and my mom and I spend a few hours the day before getting the table set and prepping all
that we can. I'm sure you're not surprised I have a list of our menu last year, the initial
indicates who brought which dish. (I know it's a LOT and a weird mix, but we all love food
and accommodate if anyone has a favorite request, somehow the Tamales & Green Chile
got left off the list, but it's tradition).

A few years ago I shared our more traditional Thanksgiving dinner menu of
favorite tried and true recipes from past Bon Appetit magazines. I gave detailed
tips what I prep the days leading up to the holiday. Stress free and delish!

#5 - Look Good! Feel Good!
How did this ended up #5, it should be #1

Take the time NOW to plan out a couple outfits you LOVE. It will make all the
difference if all else fails, and you're running around frazzled, if you have an outfit
planned that makes you feel fabulous.
Start with your Pinterest Fashion Board (you have one right?) Here's mine.
It's a great place for inspiration before you head out shopping.
I'd choose a couple outfits to emulate - comfy, casual for shopping or school and
something dressy for church, party, Christmas day. It doesn't have to be an entire new
outfit, although I'm sure you deserve one! Shoes, statement necklace, sweater or a pretty
scarf to update some classics in your closet are perfect too.
Whatever makes YOU feel great!
Don't forget to schedule your hair and mani, pedi appointments now, if you haven't done so.

My Five Favorites - Home Organization Tips

Happy New Year, friends and welcome to the first My Five Favorites of 2017!
Everything organized and in its place makes me ridiculously happy! I'm good at
keeping things in order that I see or use everyday, but the out-of-sight areas, like
our basement...not so OCD about that. Come January I'm always ready to tackle it, so
that's first on my project list this month. I'm anxious to check out my pals' favorite
organizing tips they're sharing today too:

Jennifer @ Dimples & Tangles

We have an organizer extraordinaire as our guest this month, you're going to love Erin @
The Sunny Side Up and her awesome ideas! Be sure to check out the Organize Category
on her blog for tons of tips, including how she keeps her gorgeous kitchen looking so fab!

Onto my favorites:

#1 Baking Center

Three drawers in my kitchen island are dedicated to a baking center. Having everything I
need in one spot makes it so functional and super simple to keep organized. You don't
need an island with drawers, slide out shelves in a cabinet or pantry could easily work.

The top drawer is pretty self explanatory, except for my collection of measuring cups
and spoons. I just don't like to stop and wash them out while I'm cooking.  Haha!

The large glass containers each hold a 4 pound bag of sugar and flour, the two smaller
ones in the back contain brown sugar and the necessary staple - chocolate chips. :)

The bottom drawer holds a huge metal bowl, stacked inside is a cheesecake pan, 9" cake pans,
metal pie plates, 3 glass pie plates and a bundt pan that I removed to give you a better visual.

Next to the drawers is a triangular shaped sliver of a cabinet just large enough
for my mixer and food processor.

#2 Billy Bookcase

I've used this cabinet for clients numerous times, the glass doors add style and the
option of solid panels to hide the not-so-pretty make it a favorite. Its narrow 11" depth,
adjustable shelves, and reasonable price always win out, it's from IKEA here.

#3 Budget Storage Boxes

This cabinet reorganization is an oldie from 2012 when I first started blogging.
I'm happy to say that it looks almost the same today (as the after!) except I've
accumulated a few more of my favorite FREE storage boxes ~ orange Nike shoe boxes.
The other orange boxes are from IKEA here.

(Excuse the old dark pics from my 1938 basement)

AFTER

#4 Filing System

This is actually inspiration for a January project. Our files could use a clean out and
reorganization. I liked the pretty color coded zone system and her list of categories and
sub-categories seemed functional and easy to maintain.

#5 Purge

By far the biggest impact in keeping me organized is purging what I don't use.
I read the book The Magic of Tidying Up about a year and a half ago and her perspective
and concept of organizing resonated with me, I LOVE not having stuff.

My Five Favorites ~ Home Organizing Tips

Welcome to the first My Five Favorites of 2016, today we're all sharing our
favorite tips for organizing your home.
Our kiddos aren't back in school until Wednesday, and I'm so ready to be back
to our routine. Staying up late, sleeping in, eating and general sloth-like existence
was justified by days of sub-freezing temps. I did get our Christmas decor organized
and put away, but I'm ready to get the rest of our house back in shape and I'm always
up for new organizing ideas and can't wait to see what my pals are sharing today.

We're happy to have the beautiful Carmel @ Our Fifth House as our guest this month,
if you're not familiar she recently moved to a new (sixth) house, and I'm anxiously awaiting
to see more! Her dramatic screened porch in her fifth house will always be one of my all
time favorites ~ as functional as it was fabulous!

Our Fifth House

Here are my five favorites:

#1
I love the look of an organized refrigerator using pretty lucite bins,
but they're pricey. I recently found a great alternative at The Container Store for $2 each - clear plastic shoe bins, and the size is perfect!
One fits in our meat and cheese drawer as well.
(The egg container is lucite, so you can see they aren't quite as clear,
I looked several places and The Container Store were the clearest I found)
I'm hoping it encourages everyone to be intentional about where they
return items, but it's a new system so I'll let you know!

#2
A lazy susan in the refrigerator, under the sink, for vitamins, spices
and oils, the uses are endless - it's convenient and a space saver.
My favorite is the sturdy Snudda from IKEA, 15"- solid wood with clear lacquer finish for $7.99

#3
I keep my coffee bar on a slide out shelf in my cabinet, everything
I need for coffee, tea or cocoa is easily at hand and off the counter.

#4
One of  the smartest things I've done is to share essentials for
entertaining. A friend and I have purchased the same dishes, bar glasses,
white hotel napkins and more. We have place settings for 24, but only purchase and store 12. It's much more cost effective and there's
no issue of storage. You can read more about the items we share here.

#5
Use a large container of liquid dish detergent instead of re-filling
your small bottle. They sell kits for $10, but you don't need one. Buy
a piece of plastic tubing from the hardware store and attach it to the
end of the pump.
Be patient it will take a few pumps at first to get the air out.

ikea hemnes cabinet

Happy Friday, friends!!
Ok, so I didn't think you all would read this if I titled it
IKEA Hemnes Shoe Cabinet,
BUT every time I'm in the store I stop by and check them out because they're the
ultimate in streamlined storage that doesn't look like storage.
The minimal 8.5" - 11.75" depth is ideal for a small entry, hallway, back entrance,
staircase landing, mudroom or office.
The units only have front legs to allow for the closest fit to the wall.
Available in two sizes.
