on my thrifting list... vintage decanters

Recently I've started paying more attention to vintage decanters, and found
a couple while thrifting. Hopefully, the beginnings of  a beautiful collection.
Besides being functional for entertaining, they'd make a gorgeous display in
my  built-ins in our family room, or hutch in the living room, or buffet in the
dining room, or centerpiece for a party, or....

simple solution for styling

If you're like me you tend to get stuck in decorating ruts, going for the same go-to
items to style your tables and shelves - a tray, books, vase of flowers, sound familiar?
Here's an idea for you that looks unique and sophisticated and is super easy.
If you think you can't style anything you're in for a surprise, anyone can do it with
 success, I promise!

A collection of solid color vases - while you're checking out the pretty styling
keep in mind how easily it would be to amass a collection by thrifting.

This is mine from a two years ago with a similar idea. It includes a lot of
Goodwill vases that have been painted.

The key to thrifting for pieces is to keep an open mind, just look at the
shape and texture. Disregard any weird color and pattern because you
can paint right over it!

Have fun and if you try it let me know, I'd love to see it!

best buy...blue and white pottery

Blue and white pottery with an Asian influence is a timeless classic that has become
mainstream. I fell for the 'collected over time' look but my budget and time frame didn't.
You can find beautiful high-end pieces and antiques or you can get the look at bargain prices
as close as your local Ross store. Based on my shopping experience :) they receive a variety
of different shapes and sizes often. When I was searching for a few for my One Room Challenge kitchen makeover I knew Ross was the first place to hit and it didn't disappoint.
I found my entire collection there, and some of them on clearance.

The vase above with the birds is about 17" tall and was $22.99.
The hexagon piece is about 13" tall and 8-9" wide for $12.99.

These are in my lighted cabinets in the kitchen, the vase on the left with a unique
shaped handles is about 15" tall and was $12.99 on clearance.

If you pop in to check and they happen to be out be sure to stop back,
it seems they get a sprinkling of inventory, but it's often.

on my thrifting list...candles en masse

I thought it would be fun to start a new series...
'on my thrifting list'
I often see beautiful inspiration photos of items that I frequently come across while thrifting,
but...
they don't look like the inspiration photos when I see them at the thrift store!
So I thought I'd share how my little mind works when I'm in thrifting mode.

In the spirit of the season, candles en masse is what's on my list this month,
and the goal is to collect a LOT to make a statement.
Here goes....

How many times have you seen a lone brass candlestick at the thrift store for a steal?
What if you picked up ten, or twenty...

Would you pass up one of these as too ornate or dated?

You can never have too many simple inexpensive votives...
(I think my boys lit about 50 for me at my party last week)

Garage sales are awesome for finding boxes of tapers...

That's how it will work...I hope it's helpful and inspiries you to try your luck and
have fun thrifting - warning, it can be highly addictive!!

One more thing - Keep a 'thrifting list'
I keep mine in 'Notes' on my phone, so I'm never without it.

share and chair alike...

You all know I love to entertain friends and family, and setting a pretty table and
and all that goes with it is half the fun.
My friend  (I featured her gorgeous home in these posts
Builder Beige to Black Beauty and Builder Beige to Breathtaking) and I began combining
resources years ago, we don't just borrow from each other, we actually purchase the same
items. We have a large collection of nice pieces that we share, like dinnerware for 24.
The best part, we only have to store our half!
These are the items we've amassed over the years...

Pottery Barn White Dinnerware - Service for 24 - 12 each

William Sonoma White Hotel Napkins 24 - 12 each
(Actually, I gave her a set for her birthday - thoughtful, huh?!! I promise she really does love to entertain.)
I highly recommend these, they still look great after years of use!

Mikasa Martini Glasses 16 - 8 each
I saw them at Costco a few years ago, and picked up one for each of us.
Besides drinks, these are fun for serving desserts, ceviche, shrimp cocktail, small bites.

Mason Jars 8 ounce 48 - 24 each
Great for serving Margaritas nestled in a bucket of ice, I used them for a
Cinco de Mayo get-together, salad in a jar for picnics,
pie in a jar for a crowd.

Collection of assorted white ramekins, perfect for small bites and appetizers like
I serve at my annual girlfriend Christmas party.

Votive candles 36 each
Nothing beats candles en masse!

And, my newest addition which I'm sharing with my mom, bamboo folding chairs.
I saw them on Craigslist recently, she already had two, I purchased these 6 for $80! She'll
keep four and I'll keep four. I can't tell you how excited I am about this find, I currently
have 8 chairs stacked to the ceiling in a corner of my basement - they are all going!

So that's our system for sharing our collection, do you do anything similar?

Wishing you all a happy summer weekend!!

the key to displaying a collection...

A collection can make a stunning statement, or not so much!
The key to keeping them from crossing the line between
a treasured collection of special pieces, and a bunch of cluttered tchotchkes
is a simple one...

'group it together'

Easy DIY - Paint thrift store vases to create this look.

I have a love affair with Blue Willow pattern dishes. I can blame it on a dear friend- who let me play with a child's size set of Blue Willow when our family first moved to PEI in 1973. When I spy a piece at a yard sale or flea market I am drawn to it like a moth to a flame. I hope to display my dishes like this at some point...

To give the style a new look, paint the interiors of your cabinets a bold hue (it doesn't have to be blue but whatever YOUR color is). Consider coordinating the color with the dishes displayed in the cabinet for a cohesive and chic look.

Even the smallest collection benefits from being grouped together.

I'm not much of a collector, other than my painted Goodwill vases here,
not sure that qualifies as a special treasured collection,
but those photos have me reconsidering.

How about you, do you have a special collection?

groupings of candles...

One of my favorite ways to decorate for maximum impact is to group a collection
of items en masse....the glow of candlelight is always my choice during the holidays.
