On My Shopping List ~ After Analyzing This Reveal

I love to analyze decorated rooms, and pour over the details to define what draws

me in. I especially love to focus on which items speak to me that would be nice additions

to my home or suggestions for clients. I'm always looking for pieces that give a lot of bang for

the buck, and can easily move from room to room, or that elusive one-of-a-kind treasure

that just might pop up on Craigslist. :)

You may have seen this amazing reveal that I found myself dissecting today.

White Textured Vase

I counted 8 white vases/vessels in these two rooms, I particularly like the ones with texture.

Keep in mind - it's simple to spray paint a vase

if you're thrifting and see something you like that's an off color.

Pedestal Dish

The gold detail on that pedestal dish takes it up a notch (I recognize this one from Anthro).

Again, super simple to paint a base on any bowl to recreate this look.

Work Lamp

So unique and functional ~ the idea of a work lamp on the kitchen counter.

I did a post about this gem from IKEA that they used.

Organic Wood Furniture

I'd typically disregard this piece as 'not my style' but it's the perfect addition to

achieve an eclectic look, and the warm wood is so good against crisp white walls.

I tend to be easily distracted when I'm out and about shopping or thrifting, :)

I like to keep a list of items I'm looking for on my phone.

the $89 (in gas money) nate berkus knock off

You've probably seen the new Nate Berkus Fall Line at Target, this Serpent Bowl in

particular has been all over blogs, and it's a beauty at only $20. I'm ~~cursed~~ blessed with

that DIY mindset that cannot look at anything without wondering if I could 'make it'

on my own for less. Add 'Blogger' to that and in my mind I have to 'get on it fast'

or someone else will come up with the same idea, post it first, their idea will set Pinterest

on fire and I'll be sitting there holding my $1 DIY Gold Serpent!

It couldn't be easier - find a toy rubber snake, paint it gold, coil it up

and glue it to a bowl. Done in about an hour!

How it really went down...

I found a snake at Dollar Tree, but it was smaller than I was hoping for, more stiffly

coiled plastic vs flexible rubber, and a hollow underside. So, I proceeded to hunt down the

perfect serpent, and went to Big Lots, Walmart, Target, Disguises Halloween Costumes,

Petco (where they looked at me like I was nuts) and a second Dollar Tree.

This is beyond embarrassing - I also went to Ross, TJ Maxx and Goodwill looking

for the perfect bowl. At this point I began wondering about my sanity and if this was

what my life had come to and went home and used the Dollar Tree snake and a vase

I had. I could never get the bowl right so it isn't even a 'true' knock off, the snake is just

wrapped around a vase. But, I'm good with that because I love Nate and Target and I was

feeling really guilty trying to knock off his $20 bowl. It's not a $1,000 Horchow table!

As you look at it I'm sure you're in awe of how much time and gas I wasted on it.

Thank goodness for styling and flowers from my garden, which make it look somewhat

ok. Also, I'm sure a huge percentage of you are just cringing at the thought of using a snake

in your decor! Not one of my most efficient uses of time, but I truly love the edginess of it

against my more traditional pieces, and the serpent was only $1. Woo hoo!

Paint a plastic coiled snake from Dollar Tree, I used Martha Stewart Liquid Guilding

because it was what I had on hand, but you could easily use spray paint. Coil around

your favorite vessel.

perfectly playful...pom poms

There's no denying a pom pom detail delivers up a good dose of whimsy!

The unexpected use of it in the sophisticated rooms below took me by surprise.

Adding trim would be an easy diy - as simple as grabbing your glue gun or sewing machine.

I'm still loving the ikat pillow I made to give my room some pizazz!

one room challenge...smoke and mirrors

Hope you had a great weekend, it was glorious in Denver and you'd never know it was

November. Ours was filled with hours of sports activities.

I wanted to share some of the behind the scenes details from the reveal of our bedroom.

Lots of little tips on how I created things and answers to your questions I've received.

HEADBOARD:

If you remember I was so disappointed when I first saw the headboard, reason was

because it was so short, so this is how I created the kingdom look I was hoping for: :)

Instead of sitting the headboard on the floor I attached it to the wall using D-rings at my

desired height, 15" above the floor. Bed risers weren't the exact height I wanted so I

used 4 - 2 x 4's, 2 on each side of the bed resting on the bed frame.

(Home Depot cut 12' pieces in half for me.)

CABLE CORDS:

Did you wonder where all my cable cords were?

I detest all of those ugly cords!

The cable outlet is being re-located right below the tv, I'm cutting a hole in the bottom

of the drawer and attaching the cord to the back side of the console, down the leg and

across the bottom on the underside.

CEILING FAN:

It's not one of my favorite features of the room, so I chose not to show it with the reveal.

I do like it much better now that it fades into the ceiling. I added clear globes to update it.

(Oops, I just noticed I don't have the pretty pulls on here.)

BLACK & WHITE PRINT:

After seeing my friend's creative artwork here, and this friend's beautiful prints here

I had the 30" x 40" print made at Staples for $5 and used an Ikea Ribba frame. I scanned a

photo from a book, saved it to a USB drive and took it to Staples, they made the copy in

about 15 minutes.

MIRRORS:

The gold pieces above the mirrors are heavy antique iron pieces I've had forever,

I couldn't ever figure out what to do with them. I painted them gold, and attached them

to the wall above the mirrors.

SHADES:

Blinds.com is the source for the woven shades - Natural Weave Bleached

BED SKIRT:

I'd never used these bedskirt pins, but remembered my friend had in her

super easy diy bedskirt tutorial. I simply measured the perimeter of the mattress for my

length of fabric and the drop from the top of the mattress to the floor, adding about 6"

to allow for attaching to the mattress. And, secured with these little gems! Super easy!

diy staircase finials...

Do you all remember my clients I introduced you to in mid-July, we've been hard at work

trying to accomplish everything by our deadline this coming weekend.

I should have given you a sneak peek before now, they've been weekend warriors

cranking out awesome diys as fast as I can pin them!

Our inspiration was this staircase with those incredible glass ball finials.

We had the hardest time trying to find something that would work,

right size, didn't have to be shipped from the UK, not crazy expensive, something

that worked with the existing newel post, etc.

I happened to be checking one of my Pinterest boards,

and look what I had pinned...a year ago!

Light bulb!

Exactly what we'd been searching for, who knew they'd be finials for drapery hardware. :)

Restoration Hardware

Estate Crystal Ball Finials Brass

Set of 2 - Large

It gets better...she found two of the five we needed at our Restoration Hardware Outlet

for a steal! :)

BEFORE AFTER

They decided to leave this diy to a professional, and had them installed by a contractor.

After testing the stability of epoxy on a sample board, he cut off the existing finials and drilled

a hole to accommodate the screw on the end of the finial and used epoxy to secure it.

(The screw on the end of the finial was a metric size that wasn't readily available, this was

the best alternative they came up with.)

I'm way overdue for one of my Ikea favorite posts, this one could be a quick and
inexpensive weekend diy. I love the Ekby Bjarnum shelf bracket for the clean, stylish detail
it adds to a plain shelf, and the price, of course!

It can take on an industrial look when left as is in the nickel finish,
or my favorite, give it a spray of gold paint to dress it up.

The bracket covers the edge of the shelf so you can cut the shelf without the

cut edge showing.
