My Five Favorites - Fall Essentials - Home & Fashion

Happy October friends! Do these months fly by or what? It's time for another round of
My Five Favorites, and this month we're sharing our Fall Essentials for home and fashion.
My pals' favorites always get me in trouble, I'm anxious to see what I need!
Our sweet friend Lisa @ Shine Your Light will be back next month.

Jennifer @ Dimples & Tangles

Welcome to our guest this month, Laura @ Duke Manor Farm lives on a gorgeous farm in
the countryside of Georgia. She's created the most charming home for her lucky family!
You can check out her beautiful fall tour here, and follow her on Instagram here.

Duke Manor Farm

#1 ~ Velvet Embroidered Crane Pillow

This fabulous little pillow made a big impact!
Confession:  The only items I added to my family room for fall is this pillow from
World Market and fall branches and it feels completely transformed. It's a pretty
14 "x 20" velvet lumbar, with embroidered cranes and Chinese florals, I couldn't love
it more!

Close up of pretty texture!

#2 ~ Plaid Blazer

I've mentioned before Free People is one of my favorite clothing brands, and this classic
plaid blazer is pure perfection for an effortless, chic style. I love pairing it with feminine
ruffle details and jeans, but I can think of several different looks...here's my justification
 that it's worth the investment.

Pencil skirt, pearls and pumps
Brown Maxi skirt with leopard boots
Brown leggings, cream turtleneck and riding boots
Camel wide leg trousers, lace bodysuit, cap toe pumps
White jeans, white t-shirt, white leather sneakers

#3 ~ Leather Pants

I've been on the search for faux leather pants for a year or so, since seeing Jaclyn Smith
(of Charlie's Angels for those of you old enough to have been a fan :)) wear them at a
presentation here in town. She looked absolutely stunning at 70!
I tried the blogger fav but felt like they looked too similar to typical black leggings.
I found these at Banana Republic and they're exactly what I had in mind!
Flattering, sleek, and classy but not skin tight, a beautiful dark olive color, that's more
 unique than black.
BONUS!!! I purchased them online to pick up in store - when I went to the store they were
40% off! The price still hasn't changed online, so check stock at your store and you may get
a steal! I haven't experienced anything negative some of the reviews refer to.

#4 ~ Frozen French Baguette @ Costco

In my book there's nothing better for a fall dinner than homemade soup and a
warm French baguette! You can find these at Costco in the frozen section during the fall
and winter. They're delicious and super easy to pop in the oven and serve warm.
$10.69 for 10 baguettes - 5 twin packs

#5 ~ Tulip Bulbs

WARNING: Delayed gratification!!
I'm definitely an instant gratification girl, but if something is worth waiting for, a landscape
of pretty spring flowers after a long winter is high on my list. This is the month to plant
tulip bulbs for a beautiful spring garden.
While you're at Costco picking up the French baguette grab a bag of their tulip bulbs
 OR
if your store has sold out there are a few Designer Collections available to
order on their website. Below is a photo of our yard from a few years ago, I like to plant
them in clumps of 10-15 for the biggest bang!

You should put it on your weekend to-do list because I guarantee it will make you smile
when you see little green shoots poking through the warming ground in early spring!

2016 Fall Home Tour

Happy early fall friends, and thank you so much for stopping by the tour of our home.
Marty @ A Stroll Thru Life is the sweet behind the scenes lady, who organized the great
group of bloggers' tours for the week, you can check out the entire line up on her blog.

Welcome, if you're stopping by from Kristin's @ Bliss at Home, she's one of my
favorites and always leaves me speechless her elegantly chic style!

I'm going to be 100% honest, I could not get myself motivated to get my house
ready for this fall tour. On a whim I decided to paint my living room Blush a couple weeks
ago, with no plan for how it was going to transition into fall! Then last week we had days
in the 90's and I was more into savoring summer than fall decorating. Well, I headed out
for a run early last Saturday morning, and wasn't even a block from home when I came
upon a garage sale sign, my detour miraculously led me to a couple treasures that were
the perfect inspiration I needed to ignite some creativity.
Although I'm still not ready for pumpkins on the porch (or anywhere else) I hope you're
inspired to add a few fall touches whatever your mood.

Like most all of my tours, I have fun rearranging my furniture, artwork and accessories
rather than purchasing seasonal decor. When I get tired of my same old stuff I even
trade with a friend. And, I love including foliage and flowers from our yard.
I challenged myself to put away all of my favorite blue and white pieces - I wasn't
sure I knew how to decorate without them!

Ok, so I did buy this new pillow from Homegoods. :)

I painted my IKEA Barometer floor lamp, that I've had for a few years, in Rustoleum
Metallic Gold. Mixing styles is my favorite and the gold gave it a pretty dose of glam.

So, what do you guys think of my pink living room? I'm smitten!
Even Mr. Simple commented, he described it as 'serene'. Another friend
commented that it had a glow, like candles were lit.
I couldn't be happier, it really is beautiful at all times of day in different light.
Benjamin Moore - Queen Anne Pink

My BIG mirror used to be in this spot.
I moved the campaign chest (it was in the the bay window in the photo above) to the
wall across from sofa and created a gallery wall.
Check out this Spring Tour to see the old look before the furniture switch up.

Garage Sale Treasure #1 - beautiful lady portrait.
She was the inspiration for my fall color scheme.

Garage Sale Treasure #2 - drawing of the lady.
$5 for both of them, and I had a frame that fit the drawing.
She's pretty too, the glare on the glass is giving her a scary look. Ha!

Do you remember this cabinet I scored on Craigslist? I set out to knock off
a similar one that was out of my budget.
(More details to come next week on the makeover)
A pumpkin or two will be cute in there when I'm in the mood. :)

I changed up our dining room buffet.
My favorite branches for fall are Pyracantha - they have wicked throns, but
those orange berries are so great it's worth a few scratches.
So, I think this is why Mr. Simple described the new paint as 'serene.' Haha!
Btw, I'm over it ~ more on that soon.

My oversized mirror made its way to the family room, and it's a fun change.
I used the same pillows I made for our living room for last year's Fall Tour, and
brought up this vintage garage sale lamp I've had for years.

This little boxwood topiary was one of the small plants I bought from Home Depot
garden center in the spring. I trimmed it up and brought it inside.

Thank you again for stopping by, if you'd like to keep up with the
changes happening here you can also connect with me on

Up next on the tour is Laura @ Duke Manor Farm, you don't want to miss her charming
style and the beautiful life on her farm she's created for her family!

Here's today's line up, these fabulous ladies are sure to have lots of
fabulous ideas for your fall decor and I'm guessing some pumpkins!

Inspired by Instagram Favs!

I'm always sending my clients and friends photos that pop up in my Instagram
feed. Most of them aren't on IG, and since many Instagramers don't have blogs it's
fun to see fresh inspiration that hasn't made its way to Pinterest yet. :)
Here are a few that caught my eye recently...

frilly ornamental cabbage for fall

I'm crazy for the thick, frilly crinkled leaves of ornamental cabbage, and add a plum
or fuchsia colored center and they're guaranteed to make their way into my cart.
I spied some at a nursery over the weekend and couldn't help but grab a pot.
I haven't decided how I'm going to display it yet, and I found too many pretty options.
I have a pair of smaller urns that happen to be empty, and an old wooden coke box,
some great weathered pots, a shiny silver bowl, and a big white soup tureen.
What to do?

add them to a pot or urn...

My Early Fall Home Tour ~ 2015

Thanks so much for stopping by my Early Fall Tour,
I'm thrilled to be included and thank you to Marty @ A Stroll Thru Life
for organizing such a wonderful group of tours. If you're coming over from
Dimples & Tangles you've no doubt been wowed by my friend Jennifer's talent
for creating a beautifully stylish home filled with color!

Early Fall translates to no pumpkins or fall leaves to be found in Denver yet,
which is perfectly fine with me. It seems we're all in agreement to savor every
last drop of summer, so I'm easing into the transition of fall today.

If you're new here I live in Denver with Mr. Simple, our son and fur babies in a
little cottage built in 1938. Come on in and I'll show you around, I'm sure it will
come as no surprise that I've changed a few things up since our Summer Tour. :)

I love creating new looks using what I have by moving furniture, art and
accessories from room to room, it's easy on the budget and keeps my creative side
entertained. My inspiration for the updated color scheme was this rug I scored on
Craigslist for a steal several months ago. I loved the global vibe and thought the
colors would be great for fall. The cheetah stencil was a fun project awhile back to
give my tiny entry some interest.

I went for an eclectic look in our living room, a mix of French, vintage and global.
A couple new pillows I made and changing up the artwork made me happy!
I've had the hunting dog painting for years but hadn't used it and was thrilled it worked.
By mixing in a couple DIY abstracts and other prints I had, along with the tie dye
pattern pillow, it kept it from looking too formal and
reminiscent of my gold and burgundy days.

I spray painted some branches from our yard metallic gold,
since free, gold and a little glam is my jam. :)

My favorite new accessories ~ Chinese Calligraphy Brushes!
My dear friend happened to be living in Beijing for awhile and was sweet enough to
amass a beautiful collection for me. I couldn't love them and her more!
Remember in my Summer Tour I showed you how I use any and all greenery from
my yard, do you recognize the sweet potato vine?

The big change is my vintage wingbacks are gone, not GONE, just in the basement
so I could bring up these bamboo chairs to enjoy for awhile. The white campaign chest had
been on the opposite side of the room, I used it during Christmas last year as a bar set up.
You can see it in my Christmas Tour here.
The texture and intricate pattern of the chairs pop against all the white.

On to our family room where we hang out most of the time. We're still fans of our Ikea
Ektorp sectional, it's held up really well and of course the washable slipcovers are the best.
I was inspired by this creative lady's awesome idea to pack our bookcase full of books.
I tweaked it a bit and put my own spin on it by adding some of my blue and white ginger jars.
I got lots of raised eyebrows and eye-rolling from my boys for this one. Haha!

The artwork on the mantel was in the living room gallery wall the last time you saw it.
I've had a couple old columns for years, I keep them out in the garden.
See those gold leaves ~ I brought the car to a screeching halt as soon as I saw them and
hopped out to grab them from a tree on the side of the road.
I can't wait to change out the large urn for bright fall foliage.

I found this orange pillow at Ross ~ great textured twine and gold beading create
the pattern. I kept our coffee table styling super simple.

Here's a little peek at our dining room, I set the table with some of my favorites, bread,
tomatoes, herbs and Black Eyed Susan from our yard.

I have to share this with you guys, during the time I've been prepping for the tour
we've had repairs being done on our 80 year old windows and some new siding.
The crew's table saws, ladders and tools were just outside our dining room French
doors. I was trying to be patient but every day there was a surprise waiting for me,
boarded up windows, taped windows waiting for primer and then paint.
I couldn't take any photos for days!
I just about lost it one day, my room was all finished and I walked in to them using
the electric sander around the window frames. Mr. Simple intervened and I heard
something about blog, which I'm sure they clearly understood.
I can only imagine the stories they told their wives about this lady that spent her
day fluffing pillows, cutting branches off her shrubs, setting a table with food that
sat there for days, oh and the books!

Our girl Rio ~ because I couldn't end with those ugly photos!

It's been a pleasure sharing our home with you, thank you so much for stopping by.
If you'd like to keep up with the never ending projects over here I'd love you to
follow along:

Next up on the tour is the lovely Sherry @ No Minimalist Here, I can't wait to see
her beautiful home decked out for us.

If you'd like to catch up here is the tour line up for the week.
