one room challenge - week 3 - opinions

Thanks for stopping by to check in on the ORC progress, if you need to catch up
I'm helping a friend makeover her master bedroom that hadn't been updated for
about 18 years!

Week One - The Plan here
Week Two -  Furniture & Fabric Choices here

This week we finished painting the ceiling and walls Benjamin Moore's - Simply White.
Her handyman installed our statement light we found on Craigslist, the high ceilings
needed something substantial and we love it, but are debating whether we like #1 or 2,
what do you think?

#1 -  Without glass panels  OR   #2 - With glass panels

#1 - WITHOUT GLASS PANELS

#2 WITH GLASS PANELS

PAINT BEFORE

While we had the handyman we decided to take advantage and added trim to the
bi-fold closet doors to give them some pizzazz. I tried talking her into painting it gold,
but she's not sold, yet. :)

I've had this inspiration pic from Lonny saved forever, we might try a sample door.

We scored these X- benches on Craigslist awhile back, not our usual bargain-basement
steal, but $75 each was great considering...

...they're from Wisteria and currently sell for $325 each. We're reupholstering in
the leopard print linen I shared last week.

This week we'll be working on transforming our 'hold-out wow them piece' which
 was another Craigslist find. :)
And, all of our fabrics came in today...eeeek, so much fun!

Stop over and check out the AMAZING progress all my talented friends
are sharing at Linda's @ Calling it Home.

Without!

Robin Stephens Kitchen Connections said...

Showed it to hubby....we both think both are great. Sigh.... I see your dilemah. Ugh. Sorry... That was no help at all!

I say leave it. It does look good both ways, but this is a bedroom. I realize this is a guest room and probably will not be used that often, but without the shade will make for an extremely bright light. Plus.. the shade looks like it compliments the headboard. Live with it.. if you don't like it later, then you can take it off.

I'm loving it already Pam! I'd say those benches were still a pretty good deal, all things considered. My first instinct on the light is to go without the glass, but I think it could go either way. What a great find!

Julia@Cuckoo4Design said...

I like the light without the glass panels. And those x-benches are an amazing find.

Casa Vilora Interiors said...

I think "without" looks better! I love those x-base ottomans. What a steal!!

Lisa @ Shine Your Light said...

I have a lantern over my dining table that doesn't have glass, so I immediately thought I'd be leaning that way.....but I like the way the panels show off that pretty curved detail that kind of gets lost without the glass. Also the color picks up on the headboard and the base of your x-benches (which I'm dying over!! Love!!) I vote WITH :) So excited to see your benches covered, your CL find, and all the goodness that transpires over here in the next week!!!!

Without! The light is just prettier without. The glass does nothing for it. And, my biggest pet peeve, the glass will get dusty and it's a pain to clean. This opinion is from the woman who has a glass paneled light fixture in her 20foot tall entry that can only be reached by standing on the top rung of a 10foot ladder. We've been in the house 15 years and that light has probably been cleaned 5 times and spends the rest of the time looking nasty.
Go with easy and clean.

Stephanie said...

My initial feeling was without the glass, but now I'm not so sure. I say wait until everything else is in & then decide. Both points made before are true: It will be a pain to clean w/ the glass; the glass picks up on the headboard color. So, I say wait & see. Also, try it out at night w/o the glass & see if it needs the glass to soften the light. Everything is looking great so far (Love the benches), so I know it's going to be beautiful either way.

kate@willowinteriors said...

Wow, those benches and leopard print!!!! Love! I like the lantern w/o the glass. This room is going to be fabulous!!!! Can't wait to see more!

My Notting Hill said...

I'm surprising myself but I say with the glass. Would definitely test the light at night but think it will be much softer with the glass. Oh, and yes to the the Gold on the doors. Has she seen you Lonny pic- its fabulous!

Cassie Bustamante said...

i can't wait to see the doors because that is exactly what i want to do in my guest room and hall and have just nt gotten done!!!! i like the light without the glass, but then would change the bulbs to those pretty modern round ones.

Julie said...

It's looking great so far, Pam! I'm voting no glass on the light. I think it would be a cleaner look that lends itself better to the room. Those benches Re going to be amazing in leopard :)

Unknown said...

You do and find the most amazing things! I can't believe you got those benches on craigslist! I adore your style! Hopefully you can talk her in to gold on the closets. I have my fingers crossed for you!

Kris @ Driven by Décor said...

I'm voting for no glass panels but it's a close call - either will look great. I LOVE your inspiration pic with the gold on the closet paneling - work your magic and convince your client to go for it. I'm loving everything about this room so far (and am totally envious of those Wisteria stools) - can you make your next ORC challenge my bedroom?!

Katie @ Team Skelley said...

My knee-jerk reaction was without glass -- I think it makes more of a statement. :D

SHERRY HART said...

I went back and forth but I am leaning towards the glass version. Those doors are perfect and work hard on taking her over to the gold side:)

Unknown said...

This is so great Pam! I love the X benches and I would SO go for the gold! Love the paint color too!

Unknown said...

I vote #1....no glass. Those benches....AH-mazing!! I love the idea of the gold trim on the closet doors, what a great way to add some character. Love it all!

mrs. V | Chez V said...

All together now...gold on the doors, gold on the doors, gold on the doors! Ply her with wine and do it on a Friday night. I am leaning no glass but it all depends on the lighting at night.

Denise Greenwood said...

I say without the panels and I love the idea of gold of the closet doors! Looking good Pam!

Brenda said...

The gold on the closet doors shouldn't be a hard sell - builder basic or Pam Simple Details Magic? Also, I prefer the light with the panels but it does depend on how the light looks at night. Can't wait to see this room.

Julie Taylor and Danni Greenwalt said...

I love those ottomans...with leopard fabric they will look great! I went back and forth with the glass..I'm thinking with...

Patty @ That's So Pretty said...

Pam, this room is going to look amazing. I love that you are placing the bed in front of the window. I like the light without the panels...can't wait to see the final reveal!!

Anonymous said...

Looking great! I like the light without the glass but either way looks good. The x benches for $75 is such a steal it's ridiculous!

Teresa Tomlin said...

I vote with the panels. Its a bedroom and there is nothing worse than glaring light. The panels will diffuse the intensity. The bedroom is looking good :)

Unknown said...

I'm definitely in the NO panel camp. Love the graphic feel the lantern gets without them. Love, love your benches and I'm so for the gold moulding on the closets:)

Carrie said...

I hope she goes for the gold! I love that Lonny Inspiration picture. Those benches are amazing and such a steal compared to retail!! I vote for no glass panel in the lantern, I love the way it looks when you see through to the other side of the design. This is going to be so good! :)

Tracy Laverty said...

I love the gold trim idea on the doors. What an amazing deal on those benches- they're beautiful. This room is going to be amazing!

Mallory said...

Without the panels...fingers crossed she goes for the gold trim. And I cannot believe you scored those X benches and are holding out an even better find!!!! #teachmeyourways

Unknown said...

I was going to say without the glass panels but after a second look I feel like you really don't see the beauty of the pattern so I would keep the glass. It will probably make for softer light in the master too. Those x benches were quite the steal. How come I don't have such luck????

Unknown said...

what a beautiful space to work with! love those x-benches and looking forward to seeing your other craigslist gem as well. dana

aquahaus said...

I think without. The room is looking awesome!!

Kim said...

Oh my, with our without. I think With. And go for the gold ... absolutely! I've said it before and I'll say it again ... your CL is way better than mine!!

Shirley@Housepitality Designs said...

I love the chandy without the panels...and love those benches from CL...love Wisteria's products...
Can't wait to see your other CL find...

srldesign said...

Okay, those closet doors are legit, I can't wait to see them complete! And the benches are gorgeous, can't wait to see more!!

Unknown said...

Everything is turning out great! Can't wait to see what comes next.

Calypso In The Country said...

After installing a no-glass panel lantern in my office, I realize how much I love not having to clean the glass! So I choose - without! Love those benches!
Shelley

Unknown said...

I choose without! And that gold on the doors in the inspiration photo is glorious! Your progress is looking great! Keep up the great work!

Stacey {steward of design} said...

Great benches and super great price! Love me some white walls too.
At first I thought no glass but I'm liking the glass more after thinking about it. I think it would cast off a more "moodier" light in the evening. I guess it depends on how much light she has in the room.

Crazy Wonderful said...

My vote is without the glass. Those benches - what a great score!

Katie {Miss Dixie} said...

No to the glass! It is perfect with out. And absolutely add some gold to that trim. LOVE!

Albertina M. Cisneros said...

Yeay!! I love the paneling! So, so beautiful. I do hope you do it. Also the chandy without the glass. Can't wait to see more next week.

Mary said...

I vote "no" to the glass panels. I hope your friend decides to go for the gold on the closet doors. If she ends up not liking the gold, it can be painted over, right?
Someone that hasn't changed their room for so long probably has a hard time with change. Good luck with trying to get her to accept your ideas. The room could look so great if she let's you do what you do best.

Becky {This Is Happiness} said...

This room is going to be beautiful Pam! I vote no glass! Love the headboard and the trim looks amazing!

Linda {Calling it Home} said...

Such a tough decision, but I think with the glass. What beautiful windows in the background. Love the closet door idea.

sandi m said...

NO glass. The glass stops your eyes from continuing to see the beauty of the room. And, who is going to go up and periodically clean the panels?? The fixture just 'floats' in the room without the glass. Now -YES to the gold on the trim, it will look stunning, really, and totally one of a kind.

Unknown said...

LOVE everything in here! Please convince your clients to go for the gold trims in the closet. It looks so glamorous!

The Pink Pagoda said...

I say without glass and I absolutely adore those x-benches you have! What a great find. Looking great so far and can't wait to see it all come together!

Elizabeth @ The Little Black Door said...

You have such great details planned. And I saw go without the glass!

Vel Criste said...

I Think I like it with glass panels, although, I do have to see the lighting with the lights on. Your still lucky with the bench, how I wish our Crtaigslist was as great as yours over there Pam!

Unknown said...

I like it with the panels in the chandelier! What a lovely room, and I am so jealous of those x benches! Looking great so far- go with the gold trim on the door!!! xo Nancy

Dwellings by DeVore said...

I like it without the glass, but either way it looks great! I love the idea to paint the trim gold, that would be so pretty! Also, those benches are amazing!! What a great find!

Jennifer @ Dimples and Tangles said...

I can't wait to see this finished! I'm sure you've moved on already, but my vote is no glass. I finally decided to paint my pantry doors white, and I was going to try the trim gold. I think it's such a pretty look, hope she goes for it!

Sew a Fine Seam said...

I didn't read all the other comments so I have no idea if I'm the only one saying this or if everyone feels this way! No glass in the light is what i vote for! The room is going to be amazing.
I'd try a closet door with the gold. I'm not sure I'm sold on the idea either but I love the gold trend and it's just paint. It can be changed pretty easily down the road when the gold trend is over and she tires of it!

Unknown said...

Love your scheming! I hope she goes with the gold detailing on the doors - & what a steal for those gorgeous benches! X jana

Cassie {Hi Sugarplum} said...

Those are some seriously good craigslist finds!!! I prefer the light sans glass!
