teen boy's bedroom...

We've finally, finished!
I had a great time collaborating with Detail Boy on the long overdue update for his room.
He definitely had an opinion about every single element we included.
We didn't have a clear vision how the 'modern' look he wanted was going to come
together, but piece by piece it did, and it is totally 'him!'

BEFORE - yikes!

AFTER

We started with paint, Mined Coal by Behr, and then took a trip to Ikea in search of
furniture. Besta cabinets and nightstands won out, and he chose the configuration for
mounting the hardware and assembled all of them.
We incorporated his love for tennis in the artwork.
He scoured the Internet for pieces that spoke to him, and I did the 'tennis match' abstract
below by swirling some paint from a spoon onto a piece of card stock.
The colors in the art were our inspiration for the fabric, pillows and bedding.
He was on board for mixing metals and including gold to warm up the cool brushed nickel
 hardware, frames and fan.

The upholstered headboard and box springs are easy diy projects created from
a favorite glen plaid fabric I found on clearance for $5. If you missed it you can
read about the headboard here and the box spring here.

We used Ikea's Ribba frames and large white mats for all the pieces to keep
a clean, consistent look.

After a shopping trip we noticed our cool bag from the Nike store
and thought it would be a fun addition for the gallery wall.

He chose the Mellby chair from Ikea, our bay window makes a perfect reading nook.

We carted home this tree stump to use as a unique side table.
The floor lamp was a steal we saw at Lowes one day for $9, I recovered the shade.
They both added interest to all the straight lines in the room.

While I was painting the room I couldn't help but notice how well the weathered wood
on our old ladder looked against the charcoal walls, so what's a girl to do...cut it up
and diy a full length mirror. The rustic texture was just what this room was lacking.
You can get the scoop here.
We added some sturdy hooks from Hobby Lobby to keep essentials organized, we hope!

One last diy project was a tweed covered valance, I'll share the details next week,
it's super simple!

He loves it and that makes me a HAPPY mom!

So many great ideas you two came up with... well done!

My favorite things- the plaids you used on the bed and chair, the tree stump, your adorable cat in the bay window, all the inspired DIYs you did, beautiful Rio about to fall asleep on the wood floor, using Ikea pieces perfectly, the wall color and green accents and my favorite Rafa on the wall (I am missing him this week at Flushing Meadow).

Lucky boy-great room, beautiful pets and talented mama!

Thanks for sharing the great pics and for inspiring me to do something about my son's room one of these days!

I am IN LOVE with the exposed brick! I recently went to a wedding and the venue for the reception was an old, restored cigar factory. This room reminds me a bit of that!

Hi Pam,
You did a great job with the room. I am sure your son loves it. All his friends probably want their rooms redone now. Everything is perfect.

What a beautiful transformation, Pam! I've been really behind this summer on my blog reading but now that school has started I am catching up. Holly from West Pear recommended I check out your stump since I just found a similar one and brought it home. I was going to use it in my boys' room redo whenever I get around to it so this post is great inspiration! I love how it adds so much texture and warmth. Instead of a side table, in our house it will probably be a lego prop...:)

Wow, you really put your heart and soul into this room. It is so hard to design for your own family, they don't hold back do they? But in the end, I am sure he appreciates all that you have done. This is such a well designed room. I love all the details and unexpectedness you did, like the Nike bag, the art work and the tree stump. Your attention to detail is unbelievable, and your creativity is amazing. Did you drywall the brick wall? I might of missed that in a post. Can't wait until you revamp that curbside dresser, it has so many possibilities.

Holy cow Pam, Detail Boy's room totally rocks! Hope you two enjoyed the process because the result is incredible. From the color story to the tiniest detail, I love it all (especially the mirror and bed)! Are all of his friends going to hire you to do theirs?!

Holly Gruszka said...

Pam, you and your son did an wonderful job with his room. I didn't remember the "before" look of the room but it is a dramatic change. The look of the room was still very young in the before photos, but this is such a sophisticated look that he'll enjoy for a long time. And really if he gets tired of the colors at any point it's just a quick change of the pillows and bedspread. I love every detail - and especially the framed Nike bag and the DIY tennis match inspiration abstract. Excellent work Simple Details!! :)

Quite possibly the coolest boy room ever. From the headboard to that log table (to one of my favorite books on the nightstand), I am completely smitten. I'm not letting my teen look at this or he just might make me redo EVERYTHING in his room.

Wow, you're so brilliant. No wonder I follow your blog! I absolutely love this room. I have a theory that boy's rooms are a little more challenging - since there isn't as much to choose from in the way of bedding, etc. {as there is for girls}. I'm really enjoying this color scheme & all the great diy projects you've incorporated.

Warmly, MIchelle

My boyfriend said he was tired of our relationship and needed a breakup, he started avoiding me, His attitude was killing me slowly so I did research on the internet seeking help. There I saw testimonies of how lord Bubuza helped reunite couples with his spell and how he gave lottery winning numbers to people and helped them win a lottery so I immediately sent him a text: +1 984 240 7211 seeking help. He responded. He promised to help me get my boyfriend back with his spell, I did as he instructed and he casted the spell. It was like a dream because 16 hours after the spell was casted my boyfriend came back begging me on his knees to forgive and accept him back. I am so excited and now I believe Lord Bubuza is a God on Earth. Are you heart broken? Do you need help to win a lottery ?
