painted black urns...

Hi all, hope you had a great weekend,  I took advantage of our 60 degree weather and
crossed an easy project off of my 2013 list. It only took about two hours and had been on
my to-do list for two years!

Our front porch needs a little TLC, I started by painting the concrete urns black...

Notice that worn door mat, it was one of my early diy projects,
a monogrammed door mat here and lasted about a year before the Colorado weather and
southern exposure of our porch took its toll.  That's on the list.

Our door needs a little repair, thanks to that cute girl scratching to get in, she usually
goes to the back door and rings her bell...seriously. :)

This High Gloss Black Door with shiny brass accents and kick plate caught my attention.
I even have some of my favorite High Gloss Protective Enamel left over from the
black laquer-like table redo here, so there's no excuse on our next 60 degree day!

painted steps - LOVE, but with a red door

I LOVE this painted rug, but I'm afraid it would be an ugly chipped up mess at some
point and I'd be in a pickle!
The more I look at it, the more I really want to try it!

Do you think it's fun or too much?
Any suggestions how to accomplish it...successfully??

Painting the urns made all the difference in the world!
Maybe you can do an enlarged version of the "rug". That way it would be easier to keep up...large squares rather than small...does that make sense? Like a harlequin pattern?
No matter what you choose it will be stunning!

Great job! The urns look so much better in black, and really give your entrance a great facelift. They look even more beautiful with your sweet doggie laying between them. I'd avoid a painted "rug" though. Like you said, it could become a nightmare, and it's a little trendy. What happens if you get tired of it?

Love the doggy doormat-great improvement over the worn out one. I'm thinking one of those graphic indoor/outdoor flat woven runners instead. There are so many black and white ones out there. When you tire of it it goes into the trash.
Because otherwise once you paint, you'll always be painting. And THAT pattern is a little dizzying to me. Might really be a problem if you have elderly parents coming over or anyone with vision/balance issues.
Not sure how you would secure it but I KNOW you could figure out a solution.
The urns look wonderful.

Love the black urns at your entry, we have black accents in our outdoor spaces too to complement our black front door. We had our white garage doors painted glossy black a few months ago, much more attractive, really like it. Now need to have the handyman take off the dozen faded coach lights on the house and spray paint them to complete the update.

Rio needs to teach Andy the bell trick, Andy scratches the French door on the back patio, I love the bell idea!

Loving the black urns and the brass accents for the door. Maybe you could DIY an outdoor rug in the black and white, you are good at painting rugs...! :) Or what about a black and white Dash and Albert rug out there...???

Your urns look great black, Pam! They go really well with the black shutters and stand out more. Love your inspiration pictures. The painted rug looks like a lot of fun. I would worry about people like me, who, it would be one of those "tricks on the eye" and I wouldn't see the actual steps.

I love the high gloss door. Mine needs a touch up and I'd like to try the higher gloss. I think the rug is very cool- maybe a smaller version.

THE URNS ARE FABULOUS!
I wish we could paint our door a glossy black. I love the look. We have black satin now but the Community Regs won't allow any color changes to the outside colors.
I have found outdoor rugs are great INDOORS. Outdoor they create a lot of work. They hold the moisture, it's hard to dry them out. etc. Doesn't help wet feet coming in the house!

You're crazy ambitious if you tackle that project...it'd be cool though! Glad you got to take advantage of the gorgeous weather. 80 degrees here today. Crazy!

The urns look so great!! What a difference in black, huh?
Love the idea of the painted steps, but from my experience the dog's nails give the paint job a beating. If you do it a good coat of some kind of poly or something to seal it would be necessary. Fun idea!

Congratulations Pam for your well-deserved "Best of the Blogoshere" recognition on Centsational Girl! Oh how we love your emerald beauty.

I don't think I would try that myself, unless you really want the steps to be the focus of your home's entrance. PS, I don't think I commented but I saw your dining room on Pinterest (and pinned it). Gorgeous - congratulations!

I love the urns black. I love your dog..what a great pal. Buster rings the bell at our house, too. I'm not sure about that painted floor. I agree that shoveling and salt would do a number on it.

The black really makes them 'pop' They look so good in their new black coat.

PS Beautiful dog!! We have a chocolate lab.

Pam, I think that you should skip the rug and use the same pattern but with tiles instead!!! Looking at your pictures, it looks like your current concrete flooring should accomodate it. It'll be a little more permanent and long lasting than a rug and you can make it as little or as big as you want! =o) BTW, I LOVE your house!

Hi! I think the rug is too busy for my taste. The front of your home is so beautiful and I wouldn't want to take away from the elegance. Just my two cents. :) Marie from Long Beach, CA

60 degrees! Im jealous! sounds heavenly and what a great look those urns are in black. Love your door idea and YES to the painted concrete- with a sealer I feel it would last..Anyway, you'd want to paint it again in a few years anyway! It's such an unexpected decorator's touch, that would show that one hot creative lady lives there!

My heart is going pitter pat over those urns, they look great! Mine need some serious touch up work this Spring. I like the painted concrete idea, but don't know if I would copy that pattern exactly. Maybe the design needs to be even a little bit narrower to look more like a runner?

Hi. I love the Urns but i think the pattern of the rug is too busy! you see nothing but the pattern!!! just my two cents worth!

Your urns look fabulous with their upgrade! I would probably stick with a smaller rug on the doorstep- but I know you have a way of making things work. Can wait to see what you do!

It looks so good....before it really didn't show up.....now it has some pzazz.

The black urns really pop now! And I definitely think you should try the painted rug. If it gets chipped and yucky you can always just paint a solid color over it.

Love the rich black makeover. You can really see the contrast now between the house body color and them. They look marvelous!

Congrats on all the attention your gorgeous dresser makeover is getting! Well deserved, it's a stunner!!!

Love, love the black! I always think it lends a dramatic and elegant touch. Perhaps you could paint an outdoor rug rather than the concrete? I like the idea but it might be a hassle after awhile.

I'm trying to get back into blog land and it's so fun to see what you're up to!
