diy suzani rug...

I'm so glad I kept an open mind and kept painting, layering and tweaking.
I love it now, but it was one of those projects that had me questioning
my vision, color choices and sanity.

When I gave you a progress report last week I was on the fence about the colors
I'd already started painting, but that all took a turn for the better the day I received my
Traditional Home magazine in the mail...and the Kravet ad on the back validated it!

On to the fun photos, and then I'll fill you in on the process...

Easy ....check
Inexpensive...check
Time Consuming...check, check, check!

Week 1 - Here for Ikea rug, free download stencils, plastic for stencils

Week 2 - Here for Cutting Stencils, Adhesive & Stenciling

I read several different tutorials all using a variety of paints,
I just used the black I had on hand, and didn't use any fabric medium.
The rug isn't hard or stiff, and feels like a typical natural weave rug.

Paint & Colors:
Black - Interior/Exterior Latex House Paint
Mulberry - Americana Acrylic Craft Paint
Forest Moss - FolkArt Acrylic Craft Paint

To create the decorative border I used a portion of one of the stencils, and a
Sharpie continuing around the entire perimeter.

I thought it needed something more, and had this scroll stencil from years ago,
it filled in the negative space well. I didn't worry about it not fitting perfectly,
that's the beauty of this type of hand stenciled rug, it's not perfect!

I considered lightly sanding the rug to give it a worn look, but I chickened out and
decided to let it wear naturally.

I used Scotch Gard Fabric Protector as suggested by
Jen @ Tattertots & Jello here , she has several great tips for painting rugs.
(If you haven't ever seen my Scotch Gard test check it here.)

A big thank you to Linda @ My Crafty Home Life for coming up with the idea and inspiring
us to try something new ~ now go check out all the fabulous rug reveals from these ladies...

That is so awesome Pam! Glad you kept going! My rug inside my front door is looking tired - I should paint it to get some more wear out of it :) isn't it funny how with painted projects you can think you are not liking it but if you just keep going you love it in the end. miss mustard seed even has said the same thing and I always think - if mms feels that way then i can just keep going and I will get it like I want it!

Your rug looks like it came straight out of a magazine, or off a showroom floor ...gorgeous! Love the colors and the patterns! And it looks great, paired with the pretty chair! I painted a monogram on one of Ikea's outdoor round rugs, last January. It's held up well!

Ann said...

Today was my first visit to your blog, but it won't be my last! I came to see your painted rug. Having looked at all of the Rug Challenge entries, I have to say that yours is the best, by far. I love the Donghia Suzani that apparently inspired you, but your own touches are what really made your design. I can't wait to go back and read your older posts to see what else you have done. I feel as if I have just stumbled upon a gold mine of design ideas.

I hope you are proud because you should be! You did a beautiful job and it looks great in the entry with the hydrangeas, the dotty fabric on the chair and Rio and his bone. You are blessed with the wonderful gift of patience!

Wow! It turned out perfectly! That definitely does not look like a rug that's been painted - it looks like it popped straight out of a store. :)

The rug is gorgeous. I can't believe it's painted. Green and purple are smashing together. Love the chair redo to. It's all goes so well together, and I just had to comment on your measuring cup paint basin. I look just like mine, the one that my husbands keeps griping about. He says "those are for measuring not for your painting projects" Ha, this is proof that they are for painting. LOL

Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous!! I have a rug like this that got ruined because I had to have it steam cleaned (due to a pet who forgot to go outside.) The water stains are too random to cover up, but you have made me think @ covering the whole are with a solid color, then adding a design. I am definitely going to think about it!
