the transformation...chapter 2

Do you remember back in January I said it would be fun to do a weekly series on
the transformation of our home... how about every three weeks?

If you missed Chapter 1....It was love at first sight,
go here to see the beautiful scary place on the day we bought it!

Today I'm sharing our family room fireplace and built-in bookcase.

BEFORE

Yikes! You thought the outside was bad! I wish I could blame the bad decor on the
previous owner, but it was all mine. I painted the knotty pine walls & bookcases.
I thought it was gorgeous!

AFTER

I used stock cabinets from Home Depot, and had a contractor raise them about a foot
and build the shelves above for a custom built-in look without the price.
The fireplace is constructed of a thin brick veneer,
I showed the masons a Pottery Barn photo (similar to below) of a brick wall
and asked them to replicate the look of aged brick.
They took such pride in their work, and cringed with every imperfect swipe of their trowel,
as I yelled, "Yes, it's perfect, just a little messier!"

The mantel is from HearthCo Inc.

Did you notice my round mirror over there - it's one of my favorite thrift store finds for $8!
I emptied the bookcases in preparation for my next diy project!

Any guesses?

That is a transformation - I love the look of your fireplace and the bookshelves, all of it. You're either painting the back of those puppies or wallpapering/grasscloth/something cool to the back of those shelves. I can't wait to see!

Isn't it funny how our taste changes so drastically over time? I wonder what we're doing now that'll make us cringe in a handful of years? Your taste has definitely changed for the better, my friend! Can't wait to see what's up your sleeve.

Amazing makeover! Love the brick wall, and the mantel is gorgeous. I'm guessing your next project is painting the back of the built-ins - maybe an olive green?

Oh my gosh, I can't believe that is what it looked like before and yes, I remember how you thought it looked pretty good with the burgundy walls. I agree with Dana about I wonder what we will think in another 10 years. My guess would be that you are going to paint the backs of your built-in!

Pam, you never cease to inspire me....those cabinets are from Home Depot, then customized??? That is so brilliant!! I can't believe the before-and-after. It's just lovely!

It truly does not even look like the same room! It's so amazing what a little vision, creativity, and hard work can do to transform a space-all of which you are tremendously gifted with!

I'm dying to do grasscloth on the backs of my bookcases...are you painting, stenciling, putting up fabric? You're such a tease!

I've always thought your shelves were built-ins! So beautiful. Aging my brick is on my list too! Can't wait to see what you do with the back of your shelves!
