extra high gloss paint...we'll see

A gorgeous spring weekend found us working outside, finally!
I wasn't planning on re-painting our front door, but last minute I thought it would
make a better blog post than showing you a bag of weeds I pulled, and off I went to Home
Depot in search of this new-to-me paint I've been wanting to try.

Glidden - Trim and Door - Extra High Gloss - Interior/Exterior
 No Drips, No Brush Marks
It's a very thick, self-leveling gel paint.

TIP: Read through all the instructions before you start!
After the fact I noticed...you shouldn't close your door for 8 hours, that means you
probably want to stay home and also that I'll be up till 11:30...I'm thinking 7 1/2 hours
 should be ok. :)

See those scratches on the door, sometimes our little angel doesn't go to the back door
and ring her bell. I filled the gouges with wood filler, and gave it a light sanding.

I gave it one coat, we'll see if it needs another one, and then I'll give you a review,
we'll see whether or not there are brush strokes and if the 'Extra' High Gloss is any
different than the High Gloss I previously had.

I recently found the geometric door mat at Ikea.
$14.99

Did you make any progress outside this weekend?

I am so glad you are trying this paint. I have had my eye on it for a while. Please let us know how it holds up, and if it really is a high gloss finish. I was outside a bit, but just putting the cushions out...and now it's raining #SoggyCushions

I love how your door came out! The door mat looks lovely too. We've started pulling everything out and pricing items for our moving and open studio sale next weekend! So excited. Hope you have a great week! x

I'm looking forward to hearing how you like this paint. I give our front door a coat every now and again thanks to our pup…..it probably has 6 coats on it since we moved in less than 3 years ago! I'd love to know how smooth this finish is. Loving your Ikea mat. You really should be a stylist for that store, you are their best marketer!!

I'm impressed you just decided to do it and off you went to get the paint! I didn't know about this paint..

I've been meaning to paint my front door for 2 years! Lol..
It needs a little more work than yours though so I will need an entire weekend for it..

I love the look of your door...and almost any high gloss door for that matter! Curious to find out what you thought of this paint :)

Fabulous! How are you going to get the pooch to go to the back door now???!!! We got a ton done in our yard this week-end too, feels so good!

Looks great, Pam! Andy scratches the back French door at the kitchen even though we tried for years to train him not to. Love the bell idea! He did it the first day he arrived (age 6 months) so I guess it was already a habit from his first home.

We have high gloss black on the front door, the man door on the driveway side and the garage doors. I did not wait long enough for the front door to dry evidently, the edges are smudged but have not corrected it, now several years later!

This weekend, we mulched and added rocks to our washout areas, the sloped beds and sides of driveway that grass won't grow. Also spray painted some of the wrought iron patio furniture. Raining today, I need a rest, thank goodness!

a quick question - do you remove all your door hardware to paint? I have been looking at my door trying to decide if I am going to paint and I sure don't want to remove all that hardware!

Can't wait to hear your review - my front door needs repainted. I wish we could put the new siding on this year so I could do some outdoor posts! Right now it looks so sad with the peeling paint and old asbestos siding :(

The paint looks great, Pam! Truly glossy :) Shame about the marks but hopefully that should be an easy fix. I think about repainting my front door - it needs touching up or something.

Oooh, my front door needs a new coat and I've thought about going glossy. Anxious to hear what you think! I think it looks great!

Pam, it looks wonderful....do you think this paint would work well on furniture?

Looking forward to your final thoughts. Thanks for pointing out the time of drying.

It looks amazing...love the gloss!!

Love the paint. It looks so pretty in high gloss. I'm always kind of afraid of high gloss. And I love those door mats at Ikea too. Almost bought them last time but I wish they would be bigger...more like a rectangle.

Looking forward to your review, Pam. I need a fresh coat too!

Hi Pam,

Our door is a glossy black too.. and could probably use a new coat of paint. I'll have to look into this. Keep us posted on how it looks!

Pam, my dog used to scratch the door in just the same way. I had a plexiglass piece cut just to fit where he scratched and attached it to the door with tiny screws - the plexiglass people pre-drilled the holes for me. When one piece would get all scratched and dirty, I would just replace it with another. Use the scratch marks as a size guide and get several pieces cut at once - plexiglass is cheap and almost invisible when on the door.

There is nothing better than a coat of fresh paint and clean windows! The exterior of my home has a thick coat of pollen on everything and I managed to clean a few windows and doors this weekend. I know i'll have to do it again but I had to do a little it was driving me nuts!
I'm looking forward to your paint review-I've been eyeing that paint myself.

I will definitely be checking back for a report. I thought about buying that paint myself for a few projects but never pulled the trigger. We had torrential rain all weekend so we went to the movies. It was nice!

I love anything high gloss!! Hope this paint works well ... I am a fan of Fine Paints of Europe's Yacht Varnish ... I put it on everything and it stands up to my families lack of using coaster manners!! xo

Love it! I think I need that door mat too

Well, it looks great! Love what that gloss adds.

I can't wait to see how it holds up. I'm dying to paint our front door and I was thinking a high gloss would look great, but extra high gloss, even better! Love the black too.

Christy K ~ I don't remove the hardware, I just try to be careful when painting around it. I'm afraid it would get pushed way down my to-do list if I were to remove the hardware! :)

You did a wonderful job in painting your front door a high gloss black paint. It made your entryway more gorgeous than before. Likewise, the golden doorknob can now be appreciated because it's more emphasized.

Terry said...

I like the look of the high gloss paint. Black is already a dramatic color but the glossy finish gives it something extra. That aside, did you take out the hardware before painting or did you just tape over them?

Way to go, Pam! Leaving your door with a patch like that is definitely ruining the way it looks. Applying paint and coating will do the job. The thing is that sunlight will inevitably damage paint and cause wear and tear on your door over time. Constantly checking and being diligent on repairs is the key to maintaining its good looks.
