Having a 'word for the year' has been a popular thing going around
the blogging community for the past few years. At the onset of the New Year
you announce your 'word.' The intent is to simply keep you focused on something
important to you. I didn't have plans to proclaim a word, but it got me thinking
important to you. I didn't have plans to proclaim a word, but it got me thinking
about what my word (or three) might be...
The focus was would be on diy projects and work toward growing my blog,
which I truly love with a passion!
If you saw my post yesterday you know we went skiing today, and my plan for Tuesday
was to start on my newest project. I'm beyond anxious to pop the top of
emerald green paint,
brush it on my dumpster dive and transform it into the modern, high gloss
vision of my dreams.

was to start on my newest project. I'm beyond anxious to pop the top of

School starts on Wednesday, and I'm so one of those moms that likes a day to get
organized, have new folders and a stock of supplies to start the new semester.
Fresh fruit and the right groceries for a healthy sack lunch.
That was all happening on Tuesday, too.
However...
after our beautiful day of skiing today my "words for the year" changed.
JUST DO WHAT MATTERS
It doesn't matter that my piece won't get painted, or the school folders are falling apart and
stuffed with old papers, and we're out of white-out, or he'll choose to buy cookies and a
honey bun from the concession stand for lunch, and he'll be throwing his backpack together
at the last minute, and will get to bed later than optimal.
What matters is our 14 year old has only four more years at home with us, I now realize
they will go by in the blink of an eye, and he'll be gone. I'm going to take advantage of and
treasure this time the best I can. He wants to go skiing with us instead of staying home
and hanging out with his friends on the last day of winter vacation,
and we're going....again! :)
All of those things that won't get done...don't really matter.

Love this Pam..... so true..... there will be time enough to worry with material things.... you can't get back missed time spent with loved ones. Best wishes for a year of blessings!
Yes, I like that "Just do what matters"! This blog thing has a way of taking over our lives if we let it so have fun skiing with your son.
Right on, sister!! No really how cute is it that your teenager wants to go skiing with his family on the last day of vacation? I love that you put your plans for the day aside and went! Hope you had a wonderful day on the slopes…..the green paint I'm sure was waiting patiently for you!
Amen! Enjoy the slopes and your boys.
Indeed, in the blink of an eye those 4 years will pass! I LOVE that this boy chooses to spend time with his family over his friends, you have raised him right. Have a blast today and get to your project when it makes sense. You are a wonderful Mom Pam!
That is so totally cool that he wants to be with you - and your attitude and perspective are spot on!
Perfect message for all of us! You are wise to recognize what matters.
We are enjoying the company of our youngest son's last few months with us. He will be going to college in the fall. Oh my, it is going to be quite an adjustment as his life is our focus. I know we will be okay though. The ability to explore my own creativity is the blessing that will make my adjustment easier. I bet you had a wonderful day in the fresh air of the beautiful Rocky Mountains!
Oh man, well you know I'm a hormonal mess so I'm tearing up over here reading this. How special - and you're so right about that. Do what matters and the rest can always wait. Enjoy your fun day together!!
Enjoy your day of skiing and your boy! So perfectly said. I find myself thinking these same thoughts on a daily basis - my oldest is 17...There is nothing more important than making memories.
amen! and when you put it like that- only 4 more years! yikes! i have less than 10 which may seem like a lot, but i got married just under ten years ago and that has gone by fast....
Good for you Pam! Just do what matters...I like that....that's a great mantra! ;)
Amen! I completely agree. I've changed my focus a little bit already this year and doing what matters sums it up pretty darn well! :)
What a great perspective!
AMEM!!!! Thanks for putting things in perspective for me! I so need to FOCUS on the things that really matter. That's funny because I've NEVER been a word for the year kind of person, and this year I did it. My word for 2013 just happens to be FOCUS! I'm focusing on my Spiritual growth, focusing more on my family and focusing on my Art. I guess to sum it up, I'm FOCUSING on the things that really matter! Thanks so much for your inspiring post! It truly spoke to my heart!! Have a blast with that baby boy!!
So true - spending time with family is the most important thing...everything else can get done eventually! My oldest just turned 9 and my husband reminded me that now his time home with us is half over! :(

You said it better than Nike! I need to heed your advice and ease up on the "folders and fruit first" mentality. Thanks for the perspective!
I think as bloggers the nature of the beast is to focus on project after project after project. I'm glad we have each other to remind ourselves of what's really important. Love your motto for the year-enjoy the slopes today!
Bravo! The Priority of family is What Really Counts in this World we live it!
Enjoy all the ups and downs! My Dad had a wonderful phrase that to this day radiates in my head!
No matter what......it's all about THE JOYS OF RAISING OF FAMILY!!!
Perfect! You GET IT, and now the trick is to KEEP IT every week. Youre right once theyre gone they are sooooo gone, so enjoy every minute. Hope your day skiing was glorious. Did you get to Breckenridge? When I was visiting Greg he took us there...is is such a cute town.

Soooo true! Mom is always our first job, making things beautiful comes second.... Happy 2013!
totally agree!!
That's right Pam! The kids grow up way too fast and then we turn around and wonder what happened. It's tough to enjoy the chaos in the moment.. but I know that's what's best. Your family remembers the fun times, not whether or not the project gets finished or the house is clean.

So true! I love your phrase of the year. All of that other stuff can wait. Family and friends are what life is really about. Looks like you've already got that figured out!
