Hey everyone, hope your weekend was the perfect combination of relaxing, productive,
and fun!
and fun!
Remember when I found my dining room chairs on Craigslist,
and the table, buffet, and hutch that I didn't need came with them?
The buffet found a home in my living room, and the hutch was still in the garage. So yesterday
when mr. simple and detail boywere wasting time watching football had a little down time
I thought it was the perfect opportunity to ask if they could bring it in for me,
and move it from room to room while I stared at it and asked crucial questions to see if
it looked best in the living or dining room. They were all over it! :)
I decided to keep it in the living room.
Here's my dilemma, dark or light?
Definitely going with the gold wire/mesh insert on the doors in either color.
I'm planning on a style similar to this versus chicken wire.

And, there was this piece I loved, but I've decided against the stencil on the back in favor
of the metal grille on the doors.
Here's my piece - the doors slide to the center or either side.
I love the black inspiration photo, not sure if my piece is too large and heavy for that look.
Forgive the pictures, I just ran and snapped them.
Here it is in my living room without the hutch on top, I could leave it.
Thanks, I know I can always count on you to weigh in... :)

Oh gosh.. tough decision Pam. My home is neutral so I'd probably go with the light.
What ever you decide, it WILL BE gorgeous :)

I love white, so I'm going with that. Black does give weight to a room but I do think the piece is so big that it might be too much.
I think white and gold... It's just so classic and clean looking. Also your piece is so big I would be concerned about the black overpowering the room... I like the stencil idea on the back, but I understand your desire to use mesh... Have fun painting this! - Susan
I have to go with the ladies above.. I just see it in a light color and i think the details on the piece will be more visible lighter as well..
Hope this helps!
I'm bucking the trend and going high gloss black all the way with the brass inserts..... add lights......will be stunning!!!
Much as I LOVE the black, I feel the visual weight would be too much. How about a greige color with the brass inserts, still playing up your neutrals in the room but giving the piece a little more oomph. LOVE the idea of the inserts.... and I know when this is done it will be typically "Pamazing!"
Oh boy this might end up being a tie!
I vote for black because that black inspiration piece is gorgeous and I love a dramatic pop of black in a room. Plus I think you can lighten it up with the contents. This is such an exciting project!
ok i love the black but does your hutch have a light? you can see that the inspiration is lit from the top which helps with the darker color. or if the room gets enough light, then i still vote black, otherwise light... capiche? good.
You already know which one I would pick :) I say if you go white you will never regret it! Go black you will like it a lot - maybe for a very long time - but I'd venture to guess at some point you will want to change up the black ;)
I love the last picture the best...it's gorgeous as is, and the way you have it styled...so warm! If you are not in a hurry, I'd say leave it alone...because once you paint it, it's so difficult to go back! It will be interesting to see what you decide! ;)
Tough one. I am leaning towards the white. Although what you have now is pretty!
My vote is for high gloss black with the doors to the sides with the gold mesh. I think it needs the black to weight the whole thing and definitely leave the hutch on, otherwise it is just another sideboard. It is a beautiful piece of furniture.
I actually really like it the way you have it! But the hutch is so pretty too! I vote paint it white. I think the black would feel too heavy. Plus white is easier to change later on if you get bored with it.
Well, you can kind of get a feel for a dark color since the wood is dark. You know I vote for the black! And, I think your metal mesh plan is awesome. I agree with Lisa, a big collection of white inside would look so good! Have you tried editing a picture for a rough mock-up with the two different colors? That always helps me "see" my choices.
I love the inspiration pictures. The two white hutches look gorgeous, but at the same time I love the color of your current hutch. Hmm... I'm not help, haha!
Dark! This wasn't hard at all. In fact, getting my husband and kids to help would be down right impossible. Kudos to you.
I am leaning towards the light...but I am sure whichever you choose, you will end up making beautiful!

I like it dark!! and I love the idea of the wire!! FAB!!
You asked!
I love the white version..BUT.. it looks more like built-ins and not an outstanding piece of furniture.
I would go with the high gloss black on the bottom piece (the buffet) and style it like the last picture. Live with it and see! If the room is large enough, then finish the "hutch" piece high gloss black, and put it on top of the buffet.
I usually say white right off the bat but that black piece is gorgeous. However, I think unless you have a lot of light in the room or lot from within the inside it might be too dark. Whatever you do, I know it will be fabulous!
My first choice would be your third choice. My second would be your second and my third would be your first. In other words, buffet only, white and then black. Of course any way you decide will be gorgeous and I can't wait to see what you do!
I love the piece, Pam, it is oozing potential with your magic touch. I think it should be black if the room can hold all that "heaviness" on one end. You know how that will go, you paint it black, then you'll have to add more dark elements around the room.

I think your piece would look just amazing painted black. Super sophisticated.
Black! The inspiration photo is stunning, so pretty with gold hardware and the gold mesh. Just add touches of black around the room so that it makes sense. Light is safer but not nearly as exciting. Your home is so full of light, the black would not be dark or dreary. Can't wait to see what you end up doing!
Pop girl, pop!
Pam...it could bring the eye away from your focal point which is your sofa and chairs if you paint it black. Not seeing the whole room its hard for me to recommend what to do, but with what I have seen...what if you paint it the same color as your coffee table, a creamy ivory and a dark gray in the back ground of the hutch. It would look pretty to put light colored pottery on the shelves or something else that would pop.
White and gold all the way! And although I do love the idea of the gold in the hutch, I really like it without the hutch. It's not overwhelming.
I say white - with gold hardware it's going to look so so great! But black would be just as nice. Sorry - I'm not very good help at all am I? ;)
I also say white. I love that image with the stenciled back, so that won me over to go light! It will be amazing- it's such a pretty piece!
Okay, how about this: paint it black and leave the door and drawer trim detail as is. Gold or bronze spray paint on the knobs to go with your gold-toned wire insert. I really like the stencil/fabric/wallpaper for the background, however, and it may save you having to install a light. I have a huge black TV armoire with a red interior, and have never thought it overwhelmed the room, nor have I wanted to change it. Everyone does white - dare to be different!
