Black - No
As much as I loved the inspiration photo, and so badly wanted it to work
I decided black would be too dark and heavy for my space.
White - No
As much as I love the neutral monochromatic look I decided
I wanted something a little different.
Annie Sloan Chalk Paint - French Linen - YES!!
As much as I love sanding and priming (not!) I decided this was the
perfect piece to try ASCP, the idea of no sanding and priming won out!
French Linen is described as a cool neutral khaki grey that works beautifully with golds.
Once I decided on the color I couldn't wait to get started...
(if you missed the before check it out here)
One coat down...
I took of photo of the gold accents before painting over them to get an idea of how
it would look, and I love it. Not sure if I should distress it a bit?
Give it some gold highlights, but where ? Add another color for some depth?
A clear wax will go over all of it to soften the chalkiness and give it a pretty finish.
Remember I have the doors, too.
Imagining it decked out with some holiday decor is motivating me to keep at it!
If you've worked with ASCP any and all tips are appreciated since
I'm winging it! :)

Sadly, I can't offer you any tips.... you know how that goes :).... but what a great choice of color! It is going to look amazing!.... can't wait.
I love winging it. It is looking really good. How about adding something to the back? A contrast color or wallpaper or that purple color you like? This is what I really want to know about that "no sanding" paint; can you scratch off the paint with a fingernail? Does it really adhere like a well primed paint would?
Yeah Pam, perfect timing! I am starting my armoire/Annie Sloan paint project as soon as we get home from Thanksgiving. The shop is not close to our home, I have put off going so I do not have the paint yet or chosen the color, I like several. and need to see them in person. I have enjoyed researching her paints as there are so many great reviews, You Tube videos and inspiration photos. I have no idea if I will be distressing my piece or not or which wax I will use.
The hutch already is looking great, it is going to be so pretty. I like the French Linen and the look of gold accents. I have never painted a large piece of furniture and would not have attempted it without the inspiration from you. Thank you for sharing your talent and creativity and inspiring your readers, Pam! Have a great holiday!
Pam, it looks beautiful. I love French Linen. If you want some of the gold to show through you could wipe with a wet cloth on the areas. It will give it an aged look. You could wash another color ont he backs of the shelf if you want the items you display to pop out. If you want to give it a more distressed look. I like to liquify the dark wax by mixing it with mineral spirits. It gives a depth to the paint. If you have any questions just send me an email!
That is going to be an amazing transformation Pam! I've used Annie Sloan and I love it! The wax really makes it look finished and no you won't be able to scratch it off with a nail..
I think a slight distressing might be nice?
Loving the look. If there is a perfect grey out there, I think ASCP French Linen is it!
I'm in love! The color is perfect for your house and I can't wait to see it styled like only you can!
LOVE IT!!!!! The perfect color choice and the perfect paint. I think this will work so well in your home with your colors and decor, can't wait to see it with the signature "Pam styling!"
I really like this color. And no sanding - love it!
Good color choice. Once you add the clear wax and buff it it will not scratch off. I have pieces that have been done for two years now and they still look great. You can wet distress before it is all dry or before you wax. If you want it to look old just sand it off in places that would normally wear off especially edges, corners, down at the bottom, and around handles. A different fun color in the back would really look good like others suggested.
love that color! i just used it on a couple little tables!
Pam I love french linen and have done many pieces in it. As for adding some depth, instead of using another color I would use a little of the dark wax it would look beautiful! You could lightly distress it around the edges too. It's going to look FABULOUS!! Can't wait to see it finished!
Don't worry about it chipping the waxes give it a nice protected finish.
OMG, THE perfect choice! I have wanted to experiment with that paint, and so glad youre doing it for me! (I still will)- but I want to hear all about it. It looks perfect.

Love the color!! It's going to look awesome!!
Great colour choice. I look forward to seeing it finished.
Great idea....its the perfect color.
Perfect color choice for your house! Excited to see it all finished up!
Looks like your color choice has certainly been validated. Guess all that's left to say is, "ditto!"
That is a beautiful piece of furniture and your paint effect will be fantastic. The gold coming through in a soft way will be so pretty!
Such a pretty color. I can't wait to see you work your magic. I've wondered about using it on my kitchen table, entertainment center, or other pieces. What a beautiful piece.
oh this is going to be so beautiful! and good call on the gold accents. Gold hardware too right?
Love that color .. the french linen is gorgeous. Great choice Pam!
Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

OK... immediately did some research after reading this post and....I found my "Piece"!!! My kitchen cabinets! I have been after MC to do something with them. They are new (2 years old), but basic builder product! The cost to have them redone was out of the question and the "kits" sold in the stores to paint them is too much work for MC.
We found Annie Sloan products in a store in my favorite place, Senoia, and brought home a small jar of ....Believe it or not, French Linen!! It goes perfectly with our granite. I would put the clear soft wax over it. I think it's workable for MC and I to do! Even though our home is in no way Shabby Chic or Country French I think it will work, with my black and white with gold home....We have so many "styles" but they all blend and flow with color and textures....
This could be a great day!!! Thanks
I used the same paint for my drexel dresser and it turned out so nice. I'm in love with this paint. It's been over six months and my kids have ran into the piece plenty of times and i've piled the dresser with tons of things but the paint is holding up so nicely. Waxing is a bit tricky but I suggest doing it in small portions rather than slathering wax on the whole piece at once. Good luck.
Sand before you wax! 2 coats of paint then sand with really fine sand paper to make that stuff satiny smooth! Distressing can be done with a wet cloth! And put the wax on VERY thin - I used way too much wax the first few times i used it. It is very hard to buff it all off properly if you lay the wax on too thick.
This color is PERFECT for you!
French Linen is one of my very favorites...tips on Annie Sloan...hmm...it is just the most forgiving paint I have ever used...you cannot go wrong...i have used a cloth to apply he wax, but I am getting the brush now as many of the bloggers I know love using the brush....I usually use two coats and lightly sand after the last coat...but sometimes that is not necessary...but then again, if you want to distress, sanding is needed, obviously...many use a fine grit sanding block/sponge...My next project will be to use the French Linen on a desk...Happy Thanksgiving!!
Hi Wondering if I can use chalk paint on a laminate (fake cherry) armoire? thx
Hi Unknown - I haven't ever tried it on laminate, but I've read several posts by other bloggers who've had great success doing it. If you Google it there are a good number of posts on it. Good luck!
