ikea hack...table makeover

Hey everyone, I realized I didn't even wish you all a nice weekend on Friday!
Getting back from vacation on Monday night left me in a befuddled state all week, anyway
hope yours was awesome! I was able to fit in an Ikea Hack - a makeover of the popular
Ikea Vittsjo Nesting Tables - they're so versatile, they come as a set of two, and a big bang
for the buck at $60. My inspiration was a fabulous coffee table from Horchow, for $1,000!

I had time to check out the latest House Beautiful while on the plane, and noticed this...

...and remembered one of my favorite bloggers, uber-talented Kristin, recently
made over a Vittsjo here.
I thought I could incorporate it with the same Ikea Metrik pulls I used on my
Emerald Green Dresser makeover to create a corner detail similar to the Horchow look.
A couple light coats of Rust-Oleum Metallic Gold on the tables and pulls, and Loc-Tite Super
Glue to adhere the pulls and that was it! Super easy!

Place one pull in the corner vertically, and the second pull behind it horizontally.

Did you notice my girl made it into the photo, barely. :)

My latest thrift store find is the blue and white ginger jar.
The tutorial for the leopard tray is super easy, it was made from a $2.99 Ikea plastic tray.

Yes, I have an addiction to fun pillows (and gold accents)!
No, I didn't make a bunch of new ones, I was playing with some of the fabric
patterns, I showed you for my client and just wrapped it around pillows,
the black and white is from Ikea,
the blue and white floral I stole from my back deck makeover,
the Embroidered Puebla Pillow Cover I found at West Elm it's on sale for $14.99.

Check out my newest hack

Hope you're inspired to try a diy this week!

Kelley Brennick said...

Hi Pam! I just finished spray painting this table gold metallic and am wondering your thoughts on doing a clear finish to help protect it. Your thoughts? If so do you have any suggestions as to what protectant to use? Thanks so much for the inspiration!

Unknown said...

Genius!!!

pam {simple details} said...

Hi Kelley - I didn't do a clear finish, but if you'd like one it would be easy to do a test on the underside to be sure you like it. You might try the clear spray finishes by Rustoleum or Krylon, I have used both of them in the past on other projects and liked the result. So glad you tried this, I'd love to see a picture! :)

Unknown said...

Beautiful! I was thinking of buying this IKEA table. How easy was it to assemble?

pam {simple details} said...

Hi Ashley - it's SUPER easy to assemble, good luck!

Unknown said...

love how this turned out great job

Andrea said...

How many sets of handles did you use on this?

pam {simple details} said...

Hi Andrea, I used eight sets of handles, placing them in the four corners (both top and bottom) of the larger piece. But, you could use four sets and just do the top if you're trying to keep costs down.

mollymarie1624 said...

Pam did you put the table together before you spray painted it?

Unknown said...

This is great! I love the detailed pieces you added.

Ikea seems to have discontinued the Metrik pulls. Would any of their other handles work for this hack?

Anna Catesby said...

Did anyone find a substitute for the Metrik pulls? What are their dimensions?

pam {simple details} said...

There are several online that are very similar - search 'square pulls' images. Good luck!

pam {simple details} said...

Sorry, forgot the dimensions - Ikea Metrik are 4" x 1 1/4".

Unknown said...

HI there.. just found this and this is just what I have been looking for. I noticed between the tray and the table, you used two different brands of gold spray paint. Do you now have a preference on which one looks better/more high-end? Also, I have seen various blogs use this table with the bottom being painted white or a faux marble. Were you happy with the black? I would love to send you pics of the room this is going in to get your input

pam {simple details} said...

Michelle - I like the Rustoleum Metallic Gold spray paint, it's what I normally use. I think I'd read about the other one and tried it on the tray. I ended up selling the tables to a client, and the black worked great with her home. Sure, I'm happy to look at your pic of the room! :)

Unknown said...

Wow! You're DIY and beyond amazing! I've noticed you use different Gold sprays on the site. What's your favorite?

Unknown said...

WOW!! Really chic! thanks so much for sharing! .....this is the best ikea hack I've seen too! I'm trying this one today!

In Search of Tranquility said...

This is absolutely brilliant. This looks 100 times nicer than ANY gold coffee table even at $300.
I do have a question: do you think a regular paint would work instead of spray paint? Unfortunately I don't have the outdoor space to be able to do this ...

pam {simple details} said...

Hi In Search of Tranquility,
You might try something like Martha Stewart's Liquid Gilding, you can find it at Michaels. Or, some sort of metallic paint may work if the metal is primed. I haven't tried it, you might check with your local paint store too, they're usually great at knowing which products to recommend. Good luck!

Unknown said...

Love this table!! How did you get the pulls to sit so perfectly on the table frame. I'm currently doing this DIY myself and the pulls aren't sitting flat on the table frame without pushing the other out :( Any help would be appreciated!

pam {simple details} said...

Oh gosh, I didn't have any trouble with that at all. I'm wondering if you have some warped pieces of metal?? It's been three years since I did it, perhaps the size has been changed, I'm just guessing, I really don't know what would cause that. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful!

Unknown said...

I think you can never go wrong with a touch of gold. It adds an expensive touch to any furniture piece, be it a storage cabinet or a coffee table like yours. The additional black layer at the bottom half also adds an additional storage space which is great for a messy household like mine right now.

cassie said...

i can't find these METRIK pulls anywhere! please help! desperate to try this ikea hack!!

pam {simple details} said...

Hi Cassie, the Metrik pulls were discontinued a couple years ago. I did see some on Ebay, also there are several online that are very similar. Search 'Square Pulls" Images. Good Luck!

I was married at 32 and immediately tried to get pregnant. When I was unable to conceive I had blood tests for fertility and was told that I had an FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) of 54 and would not be able to have children. Even though the doctors knew that I had been diagnosed with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis since age 25, no one bothered to check my thyroid levels. my TSH was measured at .001. My Synthroid dosage was lowered. a friend advise me to contact a spiritualist who help with fertility with his medicine, i collected his contact and explain my situation to him he prepared for me a herbal medicine which i took as describe by him. became pregnant very quickly, I had a successful pregnancy.
