diy fall arrangement...

Two of life's simple pleasures... fresh florals and a sale!
Not only is this arrangement super simple, but it cost about $15 to put together.
I love the beautiful ruffled texture and colors of ornamental kale and was so excited to find it
on clearance in Lowe's garden center, along with the mum and pansies ~ all were 50% off.

You'll need:

Planter Box/Container ~ I used an old Pepsi Crate 12 x 18"
3 Ornamental Kale Plants
1 Mum
 1 Pansy
3 Mini Pumpkins
Filler - any floral stems or foliage from your yard, I used hydrangeas.

1. Cut the plastic container down to size to fit your planter box
Remove the plant from the plastic container and remove the bottom half of potting soil.
Cut container to size to and return the plant to plastic container.

     2. Line the planter box with saucers, I didn't have enough
room, and used freezer bags to cover the plastic containers.

3. The fun part - arrange the plants.
I liked the mum in the center and kale in three of the corners,
(give them a little tilt so they spill over the corner)
and the pansy in the fourth corner.

Tuck the pumpkins in between the plants, I used crumpled newspaper underneath to
raise them to the correct height. I tilted a couple on their sides.

You'll have some holes, like this...

use the filler (any floral stems or foliage from your yard) to conceal them.

That's it!

I'm hoping to keep them alive to use as my Thanksgiving centerpiece,
It's the perfect height and gives you an array of pretty accent colors to work with for
dishes and linens.  Anyone else thinking about turkey and mashed potatoes yet?

Great tips! I see kale every year and appreciate it's shape and structure but have never purchased it myself. It looks so pretty in your arrangement.

It looks so pretty! The low box is a great idea. I think that keeping it cool will be the key to preserving it for Thanksgiving. Can you give it time outside during the week and bring it in just during the weekends? Kales do not handle sudden temperature drops well. They do not mind frost as long as they are gradual.

Hope that tip made sense...the house temperature might be too warm for it long term as they need a cool environment to thrive. A warm house may make them poop out quickly!

That's pretty amazing. When I first saw the arrangement, I thought it would be way out of my league. However, your tutorial looks quite easy. I think I will give this a try. My table needs a WOW factor and I think this would do it.

I agree with Andrea - it seems pretty easy or at least you make it look so easy. You've got the touch girl. I might try to do something like this next year outside - maybe place it on top of a little table or stack of hay. Oh man, thinking about turkey time makes me anxious - I do love Thanksgiving but then I start thinking about how much I need to do before then and how much after...you know what I mean.

I hope it makes it until Thanksgiving. It looks great.

I love the mix of textures and color, then that surprise element of pumpkin.
I haven't thought about Thanksgiving yet, as I'm still just thinking about pumpkins and all things pumpkin spice :)
Have a great day Pam,

I too am thinking of Thanksgiving already because I have 9 families on my guest list not including my immediate. I definitely need to make it buffet style with such a large group....

That is beautiful! This is the first time I used kale in my decor and I love it. Crossing my fingers that it all feels as fresh for Thanksgiving!

I think this would be perfect for Thanksgiving. It's one of the best fall arrangements I've seen. Ornamental kale....unexpected and chic. And, I love a living arrangement as opposed to artificial.

I love the array of colors and how easy it appears to put this all together. Great idea to use the freezer bags. I have been eyeing various fall florals to incorporate in and around the house but have not settled on anything in particular as yet. Very inspiring, as always, Pam!
