would you care if someone copied you???

I found an idea I LOVE on someone's blog.
I saved it to my 'DIY Projects' board on Pinterest  here,
(probably along with hundreds ? thousands? of others)
9 weeks ago and didn't give it another thought, until today.

It is an incredible update of a buffet/hutch, similar to the one I just purchased.
I would love to copy it, but for some reason I'm feeling guilty.
I wouldn't care if anyone copied anything I shared, that's the point of my blog.

I'm just not sure everyone feels that way, do you share my philosophy?
Or, do I need to look at it from a different perspective?

Are you dying to see it???
Samaa from Honey Sweet Home is the talent behind it...

...isn't it gorgeous?

Here is her before...

Here is mine...

I had planned to add interesting hardware to the center of the cabinet doors.
I was undecided about what I would do with the hutch, my friend Suzy even suggested
painting or applying fabric to the back.

I'd love to copy it exactly do a similar version. :)
Would you care if someone copied you?

Samaa is really sweet and her hutch is gorgeous. I wouldn't mind if someone copied me as long as they credited my blog. Like you mentioned, that's the point of my blog.

What beautiful inspiration!

Honestly, I personally wouldn't mind if I was copied... provided the copier indicated that they were inspired by my piece(s). In fact, I'd find that very flattering. Imitation IS the sincerest form of flattery, after all.

If someone copied and DIDN'T acknowledge the source, that's a different matter entirely!

You've clearly indicated where and who has inspired you. I'd say "Go for it!". And I can't wait to see what it turns out like!

:)

I think you're safe if you acknowledge the original source. I can't imagine someone having any issue with it! You could always ask the original source too! That might alleviate your concern.

Copying is a great form of flattery! We DIY blog to share and hopefully inspire others! This might sound funny, but I feel really happy when people want to copy me! lol
If I copy, I usually just give the blog DIYer who originally thought of it credit and link them into my blog post.

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. You have credited Samaa with giving you the idea, so why not? Most design is copied from another source anyway, otherwise we wouldn't have the trends we do. Go for it! I look forward to seeing the result.

Oh my..I have not seen that hutch...it is gorgeous and I feel that your hutch would look spectacular with the same treatment and design...And your Kopy Kat concern...oh no, most bloggers, DIY'er love that you "copy" them...I feel that is the whole premise behind blogging and Pinterest...to share ideas...Just as long as you credit the person who has done the project...to contact them, tell them how much you loved their project and blog about them to give them a terrific shout out!...

I agree, I think she would be very flattered that you've mentioned her as your inspiration. Her piece looks amazing and yours will too!

I would tend to agree that if you mention her as your original source of inspiration with links to her post she will most likely be nothing short of flattered! I've encountered several of these "interactions" from both ends and it always feels special when someone thoughtfully becomes inspired by another. It's why we're all here. And seriously, no idea is original. Except for maybe the peeps at apple :)

I'd be flattered, but it would also be nice to get an e-mail or comment from the person letting me know that they were inspired by my project. Some people might not feel the same, and I'm sure have varying opinions. I say do it because you know you'll make it your own somehow anyway.

I wouldn't mind at all, and actually be very flattered. As long as the person linked back to me as their source for inspiration (like you already did with this project). I say go for it! It will be beautiful!! I truly think that's what magazines and blogs are for- inspiration and ideas!

My thought is...isn't this why we blog? No, I wouldn't care, I think it's a huge compliment! This shouldn't surprise you, but that same china cabinet is my inspiration photo for the style I'm looking for! I've sent it to my sister to help me be on the lookout for something similar. Great, great find, can't wait to see you work your magic!

What a stunning inspiration piece! My guess is that, given the proper credit, Samaa would be thoroughly flattered. I agree with Jennifer, we blog to share our ideas and endeavors and know full well that others may mimic them, incorporating their own twist.

I would think it would be OK. You will probably put your own stamp on it anyway. If you are concerned I would email her. I do think it will look fabulous.

That's why we turn to the blogs......INSPIRATION. I would be totally flattered if you "copied" my creation and you've already sent traffic her way. It's a win, win for all. Your piece would look great with the same design or even lined with a seagrass wallpaper covering. Can't wait to see what you create.

You followed blogging protocol by acknowledging your inspiration source so I think she will be flattered. I'm sure bloggers only post what they are willing to see copied. I can't wait to see what you create!

It makes me feel GREAT when someone copies me.

I take it as a complement if someone copies me! You know they love what what you did.

It makes me feel great when someone thinks what I've done is so great they want to do the same thing! But, in the context of a blog, I think it's important that you do exactly as you did and give credit for the inspiration where it's due.

If we have the same circle of friends or lived in the same neighborhood, I wouldnt love it- but ideas are everywhere, espically with pinterest. if you find something you love, do it.

Definitely do it! If she has a blog, I would think that is why one would share DIY's. Plus yours will look a tad different being a different piece of furniture. I would be happy for anyone to copy my stuff...what a compliment!

Beautiful hutch! I would be flattered if someone online copied me. I've copied great ideas I found online, and if I post about it, I always try to give the source of the inspiration credit! Now, if it were a friend or someone who lived close to me, I may not be quite so okay with it. That's peculiar isn't it? LOL! :)

I would be happy if someone copied me. I think most people would, as long as the original source was referenced. There is so much inspiration out there, that we are bound to copy eachother every now and then!

Acknowledging the original source is the key here! In my opinion it is the biggest form of flattery and complement when someone likes my stuff so well they want something like it. Being given credit is really nice too though!

Nita Stacy said...

If I cared...I would not show it on my blog. Just do it and then say this was your inspiration. It won't be exactly the same.......just very similar. That is what blogs are all about ...sharing ideas and inspiring each other.

I would LOVE if someone was inspired by something I posted…..as you said, that is the point of blogging, to me - to share information, to inspire and be inspired! I totally agree with giving credit where it is due, and I no longer share photos unless I can site the original source - it only seems fair. I have found some of my projects and photos that have not been properly credited and that really bugs me….but sited correctly it is flattering to be copied! Can't wait to see where you go with your furniture makeover!!!!

"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!"
Having said that, we get our ispiration from all kinds of people and places. The wonderful thing to do is to give credit to the inspiration. That way both the inspirer and the inspired win!
Looking forward to seeing your completed project. With your personal twist.

No, absolutely not. You are correct. That's what blogs are for and I love perusing others' blogs. I "borrow" but I give credit where credit is due. Right now that's all I'm doing is reading blogs and getting ideas. I just started my blog and I have found it a wonderful help reading and looking at photos and tutorials. Hopefully mine will be as good as yours someday. I have much to learn. Good luck on your project. I know it will turn out fantastic.

Go for it! It is a couple coats of WHITE PAINT so not like this is an ORIGINAL piece of art of something and you will probably do the interior a little different too. Nice to give credit for the inspiration look. I keep wondering who in the future will curse all the painting of real wood! LOL. I hear some people enthusing over all the "wood". Not me.

I wouldn't have an issue if someone copied my DIY stuff I posted online. That is WHY people post their DIY stuff online.

Not DIY? Then why did they post it online? NO ONE posts before and after pix unless it's a DIY and they are proud of it.

Citing someone else's blog? Sure, but it's not a crime if you don't. One could say, 'i saw this online' without giving the url and that's perfectly acceptable.

Now if the blog is only about writing about personal issues and someone takes your stuff and puts it on their own blog, even citing where it came from, that's plagarism, no matter if they cite where it came from. The only alloweable thing, IF the person allows it, is to post a SNIPPET of what they said, then give the url to where the reader could read more. I've had that happen to me and I wasn't happy that she took my entire post and put it on her site.

EVERYONE knows in this day and age, if you put it online, it's public knowledge, unless you have a 'no copy' or 'copyrighted' or such on your site.

Just found you via Pinterest. I'm excited that you're local. If you have a good furniture refinisher... because I have a hutch I want to fix... please post details.
