Do you all remember my clients I introduced you to in mid-July, we've been hard at work
trying to accomplish everything by our deadline this coming weekend.
I should have given you a sneak peek before now, they've been weekend warriors
cranking out awesome diys as fast as I can pin them!
Our inspiration was this staircase with those incredible glass ball finials.
We had the hardest time trying to find something that would work,
right size, didn't have to be shipped from the UK, not crazy expensive, something
that worked with the existing newel post, etc.
I happened to be checking one of my Pinterest boards,
and look what I had pinned...a year ago!
Light bulb!
Exactly what we'd been searching for, who knew they'd be finials for drapery hardware. :)
Restoration Hardware
Set of 2 - Large
It gets better...she found two of the five we needed at our Restoration Hardware Outlet
for a steal! :)
BEFORE AFTER
They decided to leave this diy to a professional, and had them installed by a contractor.
After testing the stability of epoxy on a sample board, he cut off the existing finials and drilled
a hole to accommodate the screw on the end of the finial and used epoxy to secure it.
(The screw on the end of the finial was a metric size that wasn't readily available, this was
the best alternative they came up with.)
If you want a peek at some other elements we've included check out my
Pinterest Board - Client K.
Can't wait to share the reveal with you, or maybe some teaser diys first. :)

#1 These crystal finials look gorgeous! So creative and unique!
#2 There is Restoration Hardware Outlet???!!! I was about to run upstairs and wake up my sleeping hubby with my screams of excitement until I remembered that he needs his sleep since he has to catch a 6am flight tomorrow. But I cannot wait to go there next weekend! Yippee!!!
A very impressive transformation. The staircase is striking anyway, but the changes really enhance the look. I love the finials. I'm sure I would cover them in fingerprints because they look so tactile!
Wonderful!
looks great pam. nice work!
Oh Pam - that is SUCH a lovely and interesting detail! I have never seen anything other than wood as the finial, and the glass is so pretty and unexpected. The stairs look amazing - what a before and after!!
Now that is an impressive solution. Painting the railing made such a difference, too.
Oh my ... I am about to undertake a stair reno ... and this is quite inspiring! xo
What a great transformation. Love the paint and the finials. My daughter would want to fill them w/faux snow in the winter!

So cool! Even better that your client scored a deal.
I don't think I've ever seen anyone do this before! Such a great idea :) xo Kristin
BRILLIANT !!!
Very smart!! In our new house the railings are so disgustingly dirty...I went through a whole magic eraser on just one. I really thought of cutting off the finials but couldn't figure out what to replace them with...maybe this is my solution!
Those are stunning, what a fabulous idea!
WOW!! A huge bling for this NOW marvelous staircase! Great job PAM!!!!

I like it! It's all in the details...
Love the finials!...Talk about adding bling to the staircase great idea!...Beautiful.
I used the same idea for my antique bed. It was missing finials and I used crystal drapery finials. I get more compliments on my bed.
This looks wonderful. What is the diameter of the finials?
Hi Foyo Studio - I'm not really sure and my clients have moved, but I'd guess about 3.5" in diameter. It doesn't say on the Restoration Hardware website, but they may be able to tell you if you contact them.
How to drill a hole in a glass ball, such as a snow globe or other glass ball, or otherwise attach it as a stairway finial? So many ideas now after seeing this transformation!
Reading up more on glass ball finials, people pointed out that drilling a hole for a screw will SHOW through the glass so not a good idea. They suggest making a small depression in the wood stair post and gluing with epoxy, or using a metal piece underneath and then attaching to the post. Makes more sense! Thanks for this terrific post showing how to DIY - so inspiring!
