i'm a lucky girl...

I was in the right place at the right time this morning,
Home Depot, of course, and look what I spied as I came down the aisle.
A HUGE fiddle leaf fig had just come off the truck from Florida.

It's perfect, I'll take it for $29.88! Seriously, I almost felt guilty!
While I was taking a photo for all of you a wise guy asked if I told it to smile! :)

Is that thing alive, mom?

I pruned the lower leaves to achieve the tree look.

In case you're wondering about the frames to the left, I found 11 of those at
Goodwill for $8 each, some are double matted, they're 18 x 21 and in perfect condition.
Lucky or what?

I have a fun post planned for Friday, you'll have to wait till then to see where
Fi Fi (I just named her - get it?) will reside.

Have you found anything lately that makes you giddy?

Great score. Is the cat thinking about climbing it?

It looks like somebody else likes the plant too! I bought one at Ikea a few months ago and it was doing great and then the yellow leaves started happening.. I'm usually really good with plants so I started watering less and it's hanging in there but doesn't look great and I might have to go to HD and pick up another.

What a beautiful plant. Does your kitty try to eat it? I haven't brought anything green into the house (except orchids) because my cats eat it. The one cat has even tried to eat green fake plants :(

Love it! I haven't even thought to look for a fiddle fig a lowes, but that would be so fun to have inside for winter!

Now that's what I call the Mother lode! Fifi is gorgeous and the frames, well I can't wait to see what manner of clever comes to them from you!

I wouldn't have thought to prune it like that - love! I found a gorgeous open lantern fixture for my entryway at the Ballard outlet this past weekend - fabulous deal!!

What great finds! The fern and the frames are both great. Those kinds of things just make you smile, don't they?

Oh that is a good one! I will have to keep my eye out for them at HD & Lowes….although I have been known to kill a plant….or two. I love those leaves on the fiddle leaf fig. Enjoy your new girl!

Exciting Pam, I have never seen one at Home Depot! Have you had one before? Here is the key-do NOT water it every week. Wait until it completely dries out. I do fertilize when I water. I watered weekly for several years and kept getting brown edged leaves. Much better now.

Also very easy to propagate, I am always rooting leaf shoots in water and potting them once rooted to give to friends and family members. Unfortunately most of them do not have green thumbs and end up killing them! I have a baby one in a pot now that is doing beautifully, afraid to give it away so I will let it live with us.

Well of course Fi Fi is smiling in her new home! I can't wait to see her room. I need to add some large plants. Are these easy to grow?!

Oh, I love Fifi. We have a fiddle leaf too (named Fergus...), and he has lots of leaves at the bottom. I've thought quite a bit about pruning him to make him more 'tree' like and I think you just convinced me.

Pam,
You are amazing!
I just got up! And you.... You have been to Goodwill and Home Depot!
Guess that's why when I finally get "out" all the deals are gone!
Seriously, you did great. Congratulations!
I'm celebrating your success over my morning coffee (a Breville Pod machine! I might be "old" but I'm still with it!)

Beautiful plant! I laughed at the guy who asked if you told it to smile. You got a real deal on those frames!

I have been thinking about jumping on the bandwagon with a ff tree...maybe Home Depot is the place to get it if they'll take it back once I kill it!

Beautiful plant! I need to replace a bunch that I just killed...it's an ongoing process around here!

Going to do a quick post about the care of the fiddle leafs!

Mikko is SO cute, wondering if that is a climbable tree. I miss cats, we used to have 3. They are so wonderful to have in the house. Does he/she go outside?

SCORE! You're going to love it. I walk by mine daily and tell it how much I like it. ha! Maybe if I butter it up, it'll live longer. ;)

You are one lucky girl! I'm headed past a Home Depot today. I'd better stop in and check. Great score on the frames too.

What a lovely FLF! We got one there and it promptly died several months later--our fault. Big tip: don't move it, and water it sparingly..wait til the dirt dries out. Good luck, it is soooooo gorgeous!

Glad you were able to find one! Mine didn't last a month. I think I over-watered it. I'm going to try again though. Hopefully I can keep it alive!

Oh how lovely! Makes me wish I was better at keeping house plants alive!

pam - WHAT?! $29?!!?!?!?!! The one I found there for the same size was $114! Glad you got it :)

What an incredible deal on the frames! I think I might have an addiction to frames. The plant is gorgeous! I'm not good with them...seems they all come to my house to die. I do really well with ivy but that's about it. This makes me want to try again!

That's a nice one. I want a taller one, but the one they had was not in good condition so I will wait till some new ones come in.

This is June 30th 2013. I just found these plants at home depot. Very healthy and got one that 6 feet tall with 4 plants in the pot for only $39.99. Keep an eye on the cat it is one the plants that is poison to cats.

I have just found one about 4ft tall for the ridiculous price of £8.95 (just over $10, i think) at a local greengrocers. Needless to say i snapped it up.
