Paperwhites ~ now's the time!

It's time to plant your paperwhites for pretty blooms in December!
They're simple to force, make a beautiful statement, are inexpensive,
you just have to plan ahead a bit, but you'll be glad you did!
These were mine a couple of years ago, planted in Ikea Stainless Bowls,
that got a quick and easy DIY spiff up here.

In the past I've always found bulbs at Home Depot, but this year my store only
had bulbs pre-planted in pots, I found the same at Walmart - both were about $7
for 6-7 bulbs. Since I like to choose my own container I bought loose bulbs from a
nursery (O'Tooles if you're local) for $1 each.

Pretty inspiration...

They have a tendency to get tall and need help to keep them upright, I love
the green ribbon my friend Claudia @ My Little Bungalow used to corral hers.

The options for containers are endless, I've shared lots of fun
paperwhite planting ideas in this previous post if you need some inspiration.

And, the super simple instructions for planting can be found here.

Thank you for the reminder!! Come Dec. 15 I always wish I had planted them. I'm putting them on my shopping list for the week, you are the best, and this is exactly why we need you around here lady!!

If you would like to stunt the growth of your bulbs so that they're not top heavy, then review this link. http://gardening.about.com/od/forcingandprechilling/qt/PaperWhites_Alc.htm

Pam: Yes, I bought my bulbs last weekend. I usually wait for a while and have them bloom after Christmas, when everything is so gray! I too have used the vodka "trick" and did a blog on it last winter: http://www.libbywilkiedesigns.com/2013/12/how-to-grow-paperwhite-narcissus-bulbs.html It really does work, but you do have to follow the proportions. Funny how some people really do not like the scent…but we all love it!

Thanks for the mention, Pam -- so sweet! And, thanks for the reminder to get paperwhite bulbs now. It's hard to believe we're into November already. Christmas will be here before we know it!

I've always wanted to try Paperwhites but I don't think my room gets enough light.

They ARE so lovely- Tried years ago and while they were beautiful, they sure did STINK! I think I will give them another try this year. Love the lime green bow to keep them contained and the one idea with silver, pearl white and lime green Christmas ornaments at the base! OH0 and good to he you back!

Any suggestions for someone who kills every plant in the house? I tried these directions last year and I got a little green to poke out but then nothing! HELP!

Hi Pam,

I have been a fan of your blog for a LONG time but have just never written! Wanted to tell you how much I loved this post - like my friend Shelley (above) I have been wanting to plant paper whites my whole life and every year I say I will do it next year, and I never do! So thank you for pushing me, and for the beautiful inspiration photos!

I do have a question though. Could you possibly give me the link to the specific post on which you found the photo from Splendid Sass? I have looked on her blog but unless I knew where that photo was, I would never find it. I'm having one of those interior design moments where I am completely obsessed! I have to find the source of that photo because it is my new inspiration and I want to see more of that house! (I'm thinking you will understand!)

Thanks so much, and thank you for a wonderful blog!

Take care...

Sheila
