black deck...we're going for it

It's been over three weeks since I mentioned we were almost finished prepping our
deck and we'd decided on a new look, a solid stain.  Well, several rainy days delayed
the start of our makeover and gave us a little more time to ponder our decision. You
won't be surprised, we changed our mind and are going in a different direction and
 I'm so excited!!!!
We're going with black. And, yes we've considered: It may retain heat and be hot,
it will most likely fade with the intense Colorado sun, it will take extra care because it's
going to show doggy footprints and debris and we're still going for it. First we tried a
light gray sample and it didn't do it for us. I was drawn to black from day one and we
painted a small sample and knew the second we saw it.

Take a look at some of our inspiration...

We've decided on a semi transparent stain, here's a sample on our deck. We
were ready to start this afternoon as another rain shower put a damper on our project
but the forecast is looking good for the next couple of days!

Black stain - would you, could you?
Or do you think we're crazy? :)

Yes I would! You're not crazy. It's those chances we take that make our homes sing. I can't wait to see it!

I simply had to leave a comment as we stained our deck black last summer, I was thrilled with the look until the wind blew and dust from the neigbours renovations landed on the deck, not to mention muddy paws from our dog after it rained.

When it is wet it looks fabulous but on a dry, sunny day it is covered with marks from the air, I guess just dust blown around. I have tried to wash it off and no success, it is a disaster for us and I wish we had not done it. If you have a few days of good sunshine and you can protect it while it is drying then maybe it would work. I went back to the paint company and they said that this would happen with a dark colour and although they have it as fence stain, it is rarely used on decks. Also we have noticed that because it gets so hot now in the summer it started to warp a little. So.....my advice would be don't do it,

I wish that we had white washed our deck, I can't do anything about it now as they said it would need to weather a couple of years before we can even paint over it because of the oil/tannins in the stain.

It will look great in photos but not in reality :(

Addendum to my comment: We didn't use a semi transparent, so this may be different. We used an oil based stain and did three coats to make sure that the deck was completely black. Possibly a semi transparent stain without oils in would be fine. Let me known how it turns out I think it is the oils that take so long to dry that makes our deck such a pain.

Love this idea. It will look so great with your white house. Good Luck with the weather!

Love the black. I think it will look great.

I love black so I think this will be great. A semi-transparent stain may give it more of a dark grey look, but that would be nice also.

Wow, love it! We have a natural colored deck and it gets very hot. Don't think the black will be much different.

The black will look stunning with the style of your home!...Glad you are "going for it"...

We stained our previous fence a color about as dark and it was great. It certainly faded quicker than the alternative but I'd do it again. Good luck!

The black stain looks amazing!

It's going to look beautiful, especially with the white house, and your beautiful landscaping!!!

This is a fabulous look!!! However.....and you're welcome to call me crazy.....but I think every speck of dust will show up.....just like it does on any black surface. Are you willing to hose it down on a regular basis to keep it looking great? That would be a major issue for me.....but not everybody is as OCD as I am! :)

Judy said...

oh yes! i could/would definately do a black deck...i love all of your inspiration pics. i hope to re-do our deck, either by rebuilding it or just staining (i'm leaning toward that idea but the husband wants to rebuild) and would love to do a dark stain like yours. i can't WAIT to see how it turns out!

Love it - go for it!!

Black decks look so sharp. I definitely want a follow up post about how you like living with it! Our deck is in need of some serious TLC and we are leaning towards a dark, purpley-brown stain but am a bit hesitant because of heat retention.
Can't wait to see it!

I love it too!! We will all be interested in hearing your feedback on maintenance in the future, but the semi-transparent should help. It will be gorgeous...anything black is perfect in my book :)

Go for it! I think it looks great. We have a dark stain on our deck, and I will say that it does get hot on the feet and shows every spec, but I like the color so I can deal with it!

I think it will look great Pam, just be wary, you'll see everything on top of black! I know in a way since we have 2 black outdoor rugs. But I don't mind it, it makes me feel I am outdoors, We recently painted some trellis black for our pergola and I'll share it on the blog this Monday, and definitely, paint is darker. So I'm curious how the stain will look like on yours. Good luck!

My deck is black and I have learned to love it. Gotta admit, though, it took time.

I love the look! Our deck is a mess right now. It is cedar and gets full sun so the regular stain we use doesn't last long. My inlaws have a gray solid stain on their deck and it always looks good! Good luck with your project!

No you're not crazy! It will be great and it looks just like you! I'm getting ready to paint my exterior doors black and I'm so excited and so glad I went with black instead of the grey I was first thinking!

Not sure I could pull the trigger given our sweltering endless summers and current dog population. But I absolutely love the look and am excited to live vicariously through your awesome project! Excited!!

I know this blog is from 3 years ago but fingers crossed....Do you happen to remember exactly what stain you used? From your sample picture it looks really good. Most black stains I'm finding end up more like paint than a stain. Thanks!

I stumbled across your blog as I was looking for a way to keep our deck "clean " looking. We had a complete remodel of our home and chose some darker colors to keep with our modern farmhouse look. In doing so, we did a dark deck ( Benjamin Moore Black Jack Deck stain. ) We wanted to make the deck POP. I love it and I hate it. Yes it does retain the heat ( hate to walk to pool barefoot and our dogs cannot walk on it during the day.) It does look "dirty " during the day because it does show everything. From paw prints from morning romps in the yard, foot prints, dust, moths that died at night and was stuck in the morning dew, anything and everything. I have started using the same thing I use on our interior floors to clean as they are a dark grayish brown. Bona hardwood floor cleaner. It does work but just pray that no b8gs pr debris lands on it as it is drying as it will show . With all that being said, I love our color, its modern, sleek, sophisticated and very unique as you don't see alot of dark colored decks. It makes the surrounding landscape pop as well as our decor on deck. But I caution you. It does need more mainatance than any other color stain as it does faded, chip scrape easier, and when it does, it appears more like a paint. So you will need to "touchup" more. Good luck.
