First, thank you all so much, I was blown away by your warm welcome on Instagram!!
I'm still getting the hang of it, but can already see the appeal!
If you remember, on my 2014 To Do List was a spruce up of our entry including a diy
ceiling light. This gold sunburst flush mount light was on my radar back then, but at $700
I knew as close as it was getting to our entry would be in the form of inspiration!
I love trying to figure out a way to knock-off high end products for less,
and am so happy with the update it gives our little entry.
FYI * If you are viewing this in email, the format of the photos in the tutorial is much better on
my blog, just click the title Simple Details to get there.
Gorgoeus $700 Inspiration...
Goodbye lovely 'boob' light...
Hello $45 knock off...
(Don't pay attention to my new walls :) full reveal coming soon!)
I used my favorite Martha Stewart Wales Mirror 30" x 30" ($35)
and this Hampton Bay Flush Mount Ceiling Light ($10)
both available at Home Depot
1) Remove the mirror by using needle nose pliers to bend the four metal tabs away from the
backing. The mirror easily pops out.
2) TURN OFF YOUR ELECTRICITY and remove your existing fixture by disconnecting the wires.
3) The sunburst is very lightweight and was easily secured to the ceiling with four screws. I painted the heads gold with Martha Stewart Liquid Gilding I had on hand, but Rub 'n Buff would work, too.
4) Sorry, I forgot to take a photo, but I spray painted the base of the Hampton Bay flush mount
with Rustoleum Metallic Gold paint.
5) Connect the new light per manufacturer's instructions, (black wire to black wire and white
wire to white wire). At this point I turn the electricity on to check the wiring before completing
the installation of the new fixture. To be safe I TURN THE ELECTRICITY OFF again.
6) There is about an inch of drywall showing between the inside edge of sunburst and the edge of the light when installed, I painted it gold before completing the final step of the installation, screwing in the mounting screws and attaching the globe.
The wall treatment is another high end knock-off I can't wait to share,
just a few more details and I can cross the entry makeover off my list!

Pam, you are a genius! My daughter was on her way out to school and was looking over my shoulder and almost missed the bus because we were oohing and aahing so much!
Very clever. Looks fantastic.
It turned out amazing! I think you have a thing for DIYing lights. I'm still in love with your Urban Outfitters bathroom light makeover. Smart lady!
Beautiful! When I saw the "DIY" title I thought you were going to show me how to glue little sticks round a circle and paint it gold- and this is SOOOO MUCH BETTER!!!! It looks amazing! I love that you repurposed the mirror instead of trying to recreate something from scratch.
You never cease to amaze me. This is AWESOME! I cannot wait to see the rest of your entry.

I know you're going for that ritzy/classy look, but this also fits the bill in my mid-century/junk-shop decor. I love it! I have a starburst clock that doesn't have the prettiest clock face, but I bet it would work in this project perfectly! Thank you so much for the inspiration!
Absolutely love this! I have been eyeing that mirror for a while, and now I'm looking at it in a new way!
Absolutely BRILLIANT!!! Love it!

This is pretty genius, Pam! Love it!! So excited to check in here again. Missed visiting. We are finally getting settled in Germany so I can start getting back on some kind of routine. I was excited to see that some of my favorite bloggin buddies joined forces to create the best of the nest party. awesome! hope to be joining the party someday....once i dig my way out of these boxes. ;) Hope all is well!
Oh, I love this so much! I've had that sunburst inspiration bookmarked for a while but never got around to it. This is brilliant! I'm sad though...can't find the mirror anywhere at a Home Depot in my state! :( Will keep a lookout for other sunburst mirrors that may give the same look, so I'm not giving up. LOVE this so much (and I hate my boob lights too - can't wait to get rid of them!! lol). Thanks for the great tutorial! :)
Just saw your lovely DIY project on Pinterest! LOVING IT! Appreciate the tutorial because I have several "boob" lights myself that could and should be switched out!
I would love to see the tutorial for the wallpaper! Very well done!
very nice .keep the good working . It is looking awesome.
This is a FABULOUS idea and I am going to have my handyman put it together for me in my guest room, which needs some serious upgrading. I saw it today while catching up on reading your blog as part of your Best of 2014. Thanks for reposting it, otherwise I may never have seen it!
Saw your post last night and was ready to buy all of the pieces but can't find the Martha Stewart mirror anywhere! Heartbroken.
Hi Pam,
I love this project! I am going to give it a try. I have one question. Where did you mount the screws on the sunburst? I cannot tell from the pictures and I wasn't sure if you had to drill a hole through the sunburst or not. Thank you!
This. is. genius.
