diy gold sunburst flush mount light...

First, thank you all so much, I was blown away by your warm welcome on Instagram!!
I'm still getting the hang of it, but can already see the appeal!

If you remember, on my 2014 To Do List was a spruce up of our entry including a diy
ceiling light. This gold sunburst flush mount light was on my radar back then, but at $700
I knew as close as it was getting to our entry would be in the form of inspiration!
I love trying to figure out a way to knock-off high end products for less,
and am so happy with the update it gives our little entry.

FYI * If you are viewing this in email, the format of the photos in the tutorial is much better on
my blog, just click the title Simple Details to get there.

Gorgoeus $700 Inspiration...

Goodbye lovely 'boob' light...

Hello $45 knock off...
(Don't pay attention to my new walls :) full reveal coming soon!)

I used my favorite Martha Stewart Wales Mirror 30" x 30" ($35)
and this Hampton Bay Flush Mount Ceiling Light ($10)
both available at Home Depot

1) Remove the mirror by using needle nose pliers to bend the four metal tabs away from the
backing. The mirror easily pops out.

2) TURN OFF YOUR ELECTRICITY and remove your existing fixture by disconnecting the wires.
3) The sunburst is very lightweight and was easily secured to the ceiling with four screws. I painted the heads gold with Martha Stewart Liquid Gilding I had on hand, but Rub 'n Buff would work, too.

4) Sorry, I forgot to take a photo, but I spray painted the base of the Hampton Bay flush mount
 with Rustoleum Metallic Gold paint.
5) Connect the new light per manufacturer's instructions, (black wire to black wire and white
wire to white wire). At this point I turn the electricity on to check the wiring before completing
the installation of the new fixture. To be safe I TURN THE ELECTRICITY OFF again.

6) There is about an inch of drywall showing between the inside edge of sunburst and the edge of the light when installed, I painted it gold before completing the final step of the installation, screwing in the mounting screws and attaching the globe.

The wall treatment is another high end knock-off I can't wait to share,
just a few more details and I can cross the entry makeover off my list!

Hi Pam,

I love this project! I am going to give it a try. I have one question. Where did you mount the screws on the sunburst? I cannot tell from the pictures and I wasn't sure if you had to drill a hole through the sunburst or not. Thank you!

As they grew and Zipper became about three times the size of Velcro (not that you can always tell by looking since she is so fluffy) I wondered if they would stay good friends or become rivals. But though they play games and chase and pounce on each other at times, they seem to really enjoy snuggling too. Sometimes they act like siblings (which they are not, she's about 4 months older than he is) and have little spats, but the vast majority of the time they share food, hunt together, snuggle together, etc. And I just think they are beautiful cats. We do not have any mouse issues around the place with them in charge!
