craigslist...a new investment

I'm picking up this pretty little gem today! I haven't had much time to check Craigslist
lately, but popped on for a quick minute last night and look what had just been listed.
I was thinking I didn't need it but had completely forgotten that my family room trunk
that we use as a coffee table, and I've had forever, was on the list to be replaced.
Let me count the reasons this couldn't be more perfect...

#1 - Greek Key - I could stop there!
#2 - it's square
#3 - open below
#4 - hidden extension trays
#5 - wood for the family room
#6 - $80!

This all sounded impressive too...

Schmieg and Kotzian antique coffee table, mahogany, 29 ¾ x 29 ¾. There are two hidden extension trays that pull
out to provide more space, each tray is 25 ½ x 10 inches deep.

If I show Mr. Simple a brass plate with the name of a prestigious furniture company
it appears like an investment piece that we could possibly make some money from one
 day, and he's on board!

Schmieg and Kotzian was a prestigious furniture company in London from 1899 to 1907. After moving to
New York in the 1940's, the company continued in the traditional European apprentice system specializing
 in hand made mahogany woodworking.

Would you leave it as is or paint it?

i love it!!! i like the wood and would leave as is if possible- i am not sure the tone is too red for your living room though? if it is maybe paint black or try the java gel stain on it?

Wow, you are definitely the queen of Craigslist. That is so awesome. I would love to see it painted but maybe you shouldn't since it might actually some decent value to it.

I cannot believe the deals you find! That is gorgeous!

The hidden pull out trays = pure awesomeness! Love that for entertaining, such an interesting and functional piece. Altering the finish might reduce it's value but like Cassie I can see it in either black or a darker stain in your family room!

leave as is. pretty wood!

Gorgeous find Pam! I would leave it as it is for sure especially if I plan to re-sell it someday. :-)

Seriously?! How do you do that? Score after score after score. To paint or not to paint...that's a hard one. I'd research the value a bit before making that decision.

You are so good at the CL game! Great find!! I would leave as is for sure. In the first picture the finish looks a bit red (although not as much in the next picture) but once the table is styled etc I don't think you'll notice. Beautiful piece!

Another major score! I love the table as is. What a great find.

Leave it please!

Wow!! Great find! I'd leave it as is, at least for now.

Anxious to see what you do with it as I have two similar tables. My sofa and two chairs have white slipcovers so I have not been able to make up my mind what color to paint the tables. I have been thinking hail navy by BM but am still hesitant.

Wow Pam! What a score. I fine piece of furniture that you need and $80? It pays to check CL daily. I have to weigh in on the wood. I like the color, and because it's a marked piece I would leave it alone and use as is. Good luck with your decision, I'm looking forward to seeing this beauty in your room.

PAINT! But you knew I'd say that didn't you??!!

Beautiful! I'm not usually a wood purist, but I vote leave it as is. At least until you know for sure that it needs changed. Great find!

leave it! fabulous find, I am just a tiny little bit jealous ;)

How do you always find such amazing things? I think I would leave it, the wood looks so pretty! -Kathy

It depends on the condition of the piece and/or if you like the color of the stain.
Or are you just wanting to use your new sprayer? LOL.

Cassie {Hi Sugarplum} said...

wowza!! that is a great piece!!!! i think you could go either way with painting it...but just imagine it black!!

Unknown said...

WOW that is a hard one because it is really pretty as it is. I think it depends on your room. Does the wood go with what is in the room already? if not paint it! If you don't like the wood then paint it. Maybe just paint the legs and greek key detail and leave the top? another decision! I can't wait to see what you decide!

It looks like it's in beautiful condition so I say leave it! Great find!!!

I swear Pam you find the absolute best finds on Craigslist. My area in Northern California is kind of a bust. I love it and would paint it. Maybe a shiny lacquered black??

Gorgeous table....do not know what I would do....paint or leave; however, knowing you, you would make the correct and perfect choice!...great find and love the greek key pattern....just exquisite.

Oh gosh, I don't think I would have the heart to paint this. It is so gorgeous the way it is. I love all the same things you love about it. Talk about being in the right place at the right time, fab find. I love painted furniture but what color do you think you would paint it? Whatever you decide, it will look great I'm sure of that.

What a find! I am in exactly the same bind. I just bought a chinois inspired coffee table & it has the same colour . I'm leaning to a darker stain or a painted finish. My decision making will be governed finally as to how it will fit in with my other furniture. I will stay tuned to see how you go.

wao! what a find! I don't think I could paint it! But it depends on how you will enjoy it most and what is more important to you....keep its integrity or make it more fun? hard one!

The top looks so beautiful as is, I think. But maybe in person the finish might be a different story.

Score! I would paint it! I have a coffee table that is stained and I'm getting ready to paint mine.

You are on a major CL roll! I would leave it alone for a while, then later if you decide you want to paint it, go for it!

Wow it is beautiful! I love that it has those pull out sections. That's such a great find! I would totally leave it as is unless you absolutely don't care about devaluing it. I don't have a hard time painting stuff that isn't that special but in instances like this, personally, I would steer clear of the paintbrush. Also it seems like your #5 reason why it couldn't be more perfect was that it was wood so it seems like you already answered your own question. :) It'll look great whatever you decide though...you've got impeccable taste.

Kris @ Driven by Décor said...

What a find! Absolutely love the lines of it and the pull outs! I would love to see it kept unpainted but if it's as reddish in real life as it looks in the pic, I'm not sure how I see that working in your space. Maybe strip it and restain? Easy for me to say since I wouldn't be the one having to do all the work :)

Great find! Painting it would look awesome but that wood is so pretty!

What did you end up doing with this smashing piece? Paint or plain, it is definitely a find. So unique and versitile and not run-of-the-mill. What did you do?? =)

pam {simple details} said...

Hi Robin - I left it for a couple months and just recently painted only the top raised portion that was a little reddish. I painted it a high gloss black, and it looks so much better. :)

As for investments, I thought for a long time how I can use my savings to increase them. I tried different options for making money online, but in the end I realized that I like sports betting the most. Now I also use the website https://www.dimers.com/bet-hub/nhl/schedule to watch sports events and schedules.

Wow! That's a beautiful piece of wood. I'd keep it as an investment if I were you. Since it has already been mentioned, I'd like to explain how I make money. Well, I've been betting on sports for years, especially horse racing, and I love it. I recommend that you check https://theracingsharks.com.au/ as it has a lot of useful information for betters and those who are just starting to bet on sports. I hope it will come in handy for you.
