new client - fireplace update suggestions

I'm working with a new client and know they aren't the only ones with a
fireplace that gets lost on a two story wall. They were kind enough to let me share
their fireplace and the ideas I'm suggesting. They're avid collectors of art and have
beautiful pieces that would make a stunning statement against a white wall with
trim detail. These are my ideas for them to consider.

Add interest and texture to the wall surrounding the fireplace with molding in a grid
pattern. A piece of their art would be beautiful hung on this wall treatment.

Here is their fireplace, which could benefit from being beefed up by simply adding a larger
board on top creating a deeper mantle and extending the sides to create the illusion of a
more substantial piece. I always find it helpful to take a photo of anything you're working
 on.

Simple trim detail around fireplace.

Beef up the existing molding, building out closer to the edge of the wall.

Decorative detail around the fireplace and cleaner lines above.

A mirror above the fireplace is one of my favorite looks, theirs would reflect pretty
 arched windows and the yard.

Add a deeper mantel, corbels, build out to edge of wall.

Oversize mirror, similar to Ikea Songe, again add trim work to increase the size.

Build out to edge of wall and add oversize mirror with framing detail

I'm anxious to see what they think, do you have a favorite?

I like the first one the best. Of course all the choices would work, and add a lot to the look of the room. Looking forward to seeing what they pick!

Brilliant idea to beef up that wall. It's going to be a gorgeous feature when you are finished with it!

I love the first one. They're all a vast improvement over the original, but the first adds an old world character! Good choice of options!

I think they will love all of them. I am also a big fan of mirrors above the fireplace. Looking forward to watching this.

What great ideas, I like them all! Definitely gotta go with a mirror above since it would reflect some prettiness :)

Hi Pam, This is a wonderful as we consider the style and placement of the fireplaces in our new home. One will have shelves and a cabinet on either side and the other will be in the middle of a wall. A French mirror will go over that one and I will have a more substantial mantle. Hopefully this will work to keep the fireplace from getting lost on the wall. Your suggestions are helpful! Enjoy your day:) xxL

As much as I love the first fireplace when I look at theirs I am just not sure how well it would work. Am I picturing their fireplace correctly? It has a corner to the right and a door opening to the left? How wide is that wall? I'm afraid the first example would end up overwhelming the space, making the fireplace looked crammed in. Now adding a bit of detail and then a large mirror above would really give depth to that corner as well as reflect a spectacular view. I'm curious to see what they decide to go with and the finished product. Thank you so very much for asking our opinions!!

Have a lovely week!!

I love the first one. It's "different" and not the "norm"! A piece of their art would be striking against it!

The more important question is which one have you already decided on? ;)

We too have a two story family room, but were fortunate to have a beautiful hearth and custom mantle. I love these ideas. I too love the idea of planking the wall above the fireplace as well, but usually if it is between two windows or juts out, if that makes sense.

I agree re: beefing it up. I think all the examples are beautiful although I do like the first bhg and the justinehughesjones & last bhg with the mirrors. I'm sure it's going to be stunning when you finish.

Ooh, tough call, but I'm going to say my favorite is the simple trim detail around the fireplace. All are so good - it will be fun to see where this goes!

I love the BHG image with the picture molding and the gorgeous piece of artwork displayed beautifully. Ours needs a makeover at some point too and will need a beefing up, so I'm anxious to see what you end up doing here. Lucky clients to work with you.
