buffalo check...yay or nay?

Hope you all had a wonderful weekend!
I worked on my kitchen for the One Room Challenge, we had pizza at our favorite
dive and cheered for our Colorado Avalanche in the Stanley Cup playoffs, and finished
up high school track and tennis seasons. I made a trip to Ikea, I was on a mission, and
didn't have any intention of getting distracted, but as I was passing the fabric I couldn't
help but notice some new prints...they were fun, but I'm always drawn to the
 buffalo check...
it can be a bit whimsical and unexpected if paired with other modern prints.

I've still never bought it, I can never decide if I think it's too country.
I might get brave and do a couple pillows!
Are you a fan, feeling the country vibe, like it in the mix?

I think it looks great on the chairs, but I am not sure that I would want curtains or bedding in this fabric.

My daughter has it in pink in her room and I love it. But I agree it can look very country

I am a big fan of buffalo check. I think of it more as traditional rather than country. Using it on pillows and chairs is my favorite.

I think it would look great on a pillow. Whenever I want to add new fabric patterns to my home I make tea towels or dinner napkins.

It is especially French country and I love it!

I love love buffalo check and use it my home all the time...so it's a yay for me!!

Love it and plan to have it in different colors all over my home. I think it depends on what you pair it with as too if it says French Country or Rustic Country. either way, I love it.. Just looking at it makes me smile and feel peaceful.

I adore buffalo check. I think it is only country when paired with other country things. It can also be very elegant!

I was noodling around the Ikea website yesterday and spotted the buffalo check as well! I'm a fan and think it's a classic that works well in any setting, with any decorating style. I think it's the scale and graphic nature of the pattern. Sounds like a full and busy week-end Pam!

I like it. Not sure I'd ever use it in my own house but I'd be all over it in a client's.

YAY! i love it on one thing in an eclectic mix, but NOT in the super traditional uses or homes.

I like it in a child's room as an accent.

Love Buffalo Check (as she opens the Buffalo Check curtains in the bedroom) and think it can go country or traditional or even contemporary if it's done right. To me it's just fun!

I love Buffalo Check! Karastan has a great buffalo check (although they call it french check) rug that I have used a few times. I think it's fun for fabric or flooring!

I'm loving it again....actually I've had 2 pairs of blk/wht buffalo ck curtains for the last 15 yrs! I've moved into different homes along the way and always took the curtains with me....some times those curtains stayed in storage cuz I had gotten tired of them or their style wasn't right with the house at that time. When we moved 2 yrs ago to a "modern style farmhouse" i wasn't sure if they'd come out of storage...but last yr I thought it made perfect sense...so they're up! To me they're timeless...a classic country.

I like it Pam! I'd probably use just a little and I think the pillows or a couple chairs would be fun. I think the beige/brown is more country feeling than the blue (in my opinion for whatever that's worth;)

Hope your week is off to a good start! xxleslie

I have stayed clear of it because it can make a room look "country". I do like the examples in green!. They are refreshing!

Love buffalo check! I say if you're drawn to it, do it. A couple of pillows won't countrify the space :)

I think it depends on the color and the setting, sometimes I love it and others times not so much!

I do like checks...A large check leans on the contemporary side...a small check leans country..but it does depend on how you use it...

I love buffalo check and I think it goes with different styles depending on the room. I bought a large black and white buffalo check fabric for my laundry room sink which I am planning on working on one of these days...

I love it on the chairs with the colorful piping, but this can definitely turn country very fast if used too much.

I love it! But I too, like you, still need to make the jump. Pam, with your creativity, you can pull off anything in your home! Go for it!

I think the buffalo check goes with any style, I agree the smaller the check the more country it looks. I have black buffalo check on my bench in the diningroom, doesn't look country to me.smile

I love buffalo checks and think they are perfect on anything. I would love to have you link up to Inspire Me this afternoon. Party goes live at 3 PM. www.astrollthrulife.net Hope to see you there.

It's a nay for me. No matter how popular it gets, it just always looks so country/picnic-y to me. And that's definitely not my style. That said, I'd love to see what you come up with! :)

I'm a fan. I adore Kim's with the yellow piping.

I think it's a yes, depending on the style of the room or even if it's just a small mix like in a pillow. I love the look :)

I love this pattern, and have had main floor curtains in a red/beige/grey version of it for about 4 years now. It's not for everyone. My biggest challenge was to keep so much pattern from overwhelming the space.

Holly Gruszka said...

You might not necessarily see it in my home but I'm a big fan - it's timeless and classic. I actually have a yard of a black and white buffalo check just waiting for a project.

Pillows would be great as you could change them out easily if you got tired of it or wanted a new look for a bit. I had to wear checks to school as a kid. Plain blue or white or blue and white checks. So I've never been overly fond of checks. Buffalo checks are better and fun colors are great though!

YES! I love a HUGE buffalo check. I bought 40 yards of a chocolate buffalo check from Ballard when they clearanced it out a couple years ago. Now, it is back in style. I am going to make curtains for our game room and recover my grandmother's french sofa. I think it is timeless. Very Charles Faudree. I especially like your last photo with the scalloped benches. Thanks for bringing up the subject of buffalo check! I pinned this blog too!! xo, Emily

I like it especially in the lime green draperies and chairs…so fun!!

The red bedding is a bit much…and yes, I would be hesitant to use it. But on pillows, or a side chair, yes definitely. It adds a touch of bold, and of course, color!

It looks great in the b&w on the chairs! The others remind me of my mom's 90s home decor magazines. Personally, I love wildly colorful plaids on furniture though, so to each his own :)

Buffalo checks? Oh heck, yeah!! :)
It looks like lots of people have opinions on this subject, haha. I like checks mixed with French country, and I also use checks, stripes, etc. to keep my rooms from looking ultra-feminine (since a man lives in my house too.) I particularly love the black and cream, and also anything green!

After reading many of the comments I see I'm not alone in loving the buffalo check! Especially with the black furniture! It will go really well with your style. Not too country at all!

I adore buffalo check!! I'm currently on the hunt for buffalo check curtains for our living room.

I love the black and white buffalo check, especially for a little boy's room. I just used that gray/white buffalo check duvet from IKEA in my sister's room because she has a little more rustic taste and I love how it worked in there!

stephanie at Stephanie Kraus Designs said...

definitely like it on upholstery in a large check! IT's a total classic!!

Tracy Laverty said...

Great question. I feel like I have this same debate in my head too. I think buffalo check is classic if done correctly, however, I still haven't put any in my home yet and I've been thinking about how I can do this. Your examples are beautiful.

A big fat yes in my book. Total classic.

Well, when I read the title I thought to myself … Pam knows I am a fan! And then there was my chair and sofa!! Thank you!! It makes me smile everyday when I walk in the kitchen!! xo
