Imagine my surprise ~ BHG 2015 Color Palette

While wandering through a thrift store a couple months ago I noticed this beautiful
vintage painting on canvas. I loved it, but it was December and I was knee deep in Christmas
prep, parties, shopping and the last thing I needed was to haul home another treasure.
But, it spoke to me and I envisioned it being the inspiration piece for a pretty
spring/summer update, paired with some modern elements.
Imagine my surprise yesterday when Better Homes & Gardens announced their
2015 Color Palette of the Year
and three of their picks are included in my painting! Who knew?!?!

Rain Forest Green, Warm Blush, Shape-Shifting Coral
Oceanic Blue, Fresh Berry, Sophisticated Gray

Better Homes & Gardens 2015 Color Palette of the Year

I'd been considering a few ideas, but hadn't thought of painting...hmmm.
I'm working up the courage for something with this vibe...

teach me your ways sarah richardson

I've been pouring over Sarah Richardson's new book, Sarah Style, dissecting
her design. She's long been a favorite, and after analyzing her portfolio I can say
my favorite element is her fearless mix of styles.
I'm sharing a few photos from her book (which I love) along with my
old school thoughts and why I assumed the design wouldn't have worked.

*************

Old school thought:
Detailed chairs and table bases would compete with each other.

Here she mixes a variety of table styles
Old school thought:
Industrial coffee table paired with the french style side tables wouldn't work.

While I was checking out the tables I happened to notice the four upholstered chairs.
Old school thought:
This end of the room feels heavy and unbalanced vs the opposite end with
only the two small stools (scroll up to see).

This room is so interesting, six tables (including ottoman, consoles and coffee table
in bottom right corner) such a varied mix, and the two consoles are similar.
Old school thought:
Too much going on and too many styles mixed.

Such a pretty corner.
Old school thought:
Mix any two of the three styles, but not three different styles and wood tones.

Stripes and more stripes, so unexpected and it gives this neutral room some pizazz.
Old school thought:
Choose a geometric, floral or ikat instead of two stripes.

I kept noticing these stools again and again, and finally figured out they're in her line
of custom furniture. She says, "No room escapes them, they're the perfect
18" x 18" x 18" size and fit in every room and every scheme."

Do you love her style as much as I do?
If you have her book, what did you think?

best of the nest features january

Happy Friday, friends!
Thanks so much for sharing your awesome projects with us,
we're so happy to feature these talented ladies and their fabulous ideas!

Cyndy @ The Creativity Exchange shared her DIY Narrow Built in Bar
tucked in an unused corner of her dining room, it takes up only 6" at the top and 14" at the
bottom. It's perfect for entertaining, has gorgeous custom features and is super functional!
Holy wow - perfect!

Summer @ Simple Stylings created this DIY Faux Demijohn Bottle,
You may have seen them at retail stores for $$$ ~ this smart cookie did it for $4!
It's is on my weekend To-Do list, and when you see how easy it is you'll be
adding it to yours, too! :)

Kim @ Tidbits & Twine revealed her gorgeous guest bathroom makeover,
the warm wood tones against the crisp white background is a beautiful, timeless
combination. It's packed full of unique touches throughout, I love her idea for the
 shower curtain.

Jenny @ Refresh Living created a rustic DIY Birch Log Fireplace Screen,
she shares her great tutorial and makes it appear pretty easy to achieve this popular
look. It's even removable for times when they want a fire.

Yami @ The Latina Next Door shared her Before & After Dining Room Chairs.
She did such a beautiful job transforming this thrifting steal with spray paint and
new upholstery, it's hard to imagine the scary Before!

Get your projects ready, our next party is in three short weeks,
mark your calendars for February 27th!

Have a wonderful weekend!

loving my valentine vignette

Although I miss the some of the sweet Valentine traditions with little ones, I wasn't ever
fond of cute cupids and construction paper heart decor. This year simple pink flowers I
picked up at the grocery store, a couple of pink books, and my newly thrifted foo dog
for a little unexpected edge are making me happy!
I've rounded up a few other pretty looks for you, it's a great excuse to pick up
some fresh flowers!

Add a few of your favorite flowers to an interesting vessel and you're set,
no cupids necessary.
